A separate aerated biological stage for your pond filter

The Filtreau 190L Moving-Bed Filter is a separate biological stage for a pond system that already removes solid waste mechanically. It is a useful way to build a modular filter installation or add biological treatment behind a standalone drum without replacing the whole system.

The 190-litre figure describes the chamber volume, not the quantity of media to pour into it. A moving bed needs open water and sufficient air to keep the media circulating. Space for movement is part of the filtration process.

What a moving bed does

Compatible media provides surfaces for bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrite as pond water passes through. Air from the diffuser supplies oxygen and moves the media, helping water reach its surfaces. The bacteria establish over time, so a new chamber is not an instant solution to an existing water-quality problem.

Mechanical filtration should come first. A Filtreau HF30 drum or another suitable pre-filter removes solids that would otherwise accumulate in the biological chamber. The moving bed is not intended as a replacement for a drum screen or a dirty-water settlement tank.

Media and air-pump selection

Choose a media grade that works with the chamber’s retention fittings and load it so movement remains even. The fitted 9-inch diffuser requires a separate air pump, and useful airflow depends on water depth, pipe resistance and the diffuser’s working pressure.

Do not assume a fixed percentage fill is correct for every media type. Observe the bed once running and adjust the setup before increasing the loading. Static Japanese matting belongs in a separate designed section, not among tumbling media where it would restrict movement.

Connections and operating flow

The PE housing has one 110 mm inlet and one 110 mm outlet, with a stated maximum flow of 20,000 litres/hour subject to the installed connections and pipework. The complete circuit must be checked for restriction; a headline maximum is not a promise through every combination of bends, valves and reducers.

Set the 550 × 550 × 750 mm body on a level, supported base and arrange the inlet, outlet and water level to suit the surrounding filters. Keep isolation and drainage practical so the chamber can be serviced without unnecessarily emptying the pond.

Commissioning and long-term use

Introduce the biological load gradually, measuring ammonia and nitrite as feeding increases. The moving bed can remain useful as the pond develops, provided the media and oxygen supply are matched to the demand. UV-C, if required for green-water control, is a separate stage.

Keep the air supply protected, check that media remains retained and moving, and avoid harsh cleaning that unnecessarily removes the established biofilm.
