A colour programme should fit within the normal ration. Aqua Source specifies a two-week Colour Boost cycle followed by four weeks on another food; Saki-Hikari Deep Red is described as supplementary. Read the exact product instructions rather than applying one brand’s programme to another.
Choosing Colour Enhancing Koi Food
Colour foods vary from complete daily diets to specialist supplements. A stronger colour ingredient or a higher protein figure does not automatically mean better results for every koi. Genetics, skin quality and fish condition matter, and concentrated products can have particular mixing or cycling directions.

Fitting colour food into the normal ration
Follow the selected food’s mixing or feeding programme and include it within the total amount you feed. Some colour foods are intended as a daily diet; others are specialist supplementary feeds.
Keep any precautions about white areas, mixing proportions or feeding cycles with the named product. Continue to watch appetite, fish condition and water quality while using the food.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.

How do colour foods fit into a koi feeding programme?
Choose the pigment-focused formula for the result you want and follow its own feeding or mixing programme. Count it within the total ration and observe the fish over time.
Can colour food affect white areas?
Some specialised formulas have specific precautions. Hikari warns that exclusive Deep Red feeding can affect white areas and gives a one-part Deep Red to two-parts Balance mixing example. Read that food’s full guidance.
Is colour enhancement guaranteed?
Food supplies dietary pigments, but appearance also depends on genetics, fish condition and the pond environment. Compare realistic product purposes rather than promises of a particular result.
