Match the pellet to the fish
Watch the fish taking the pellet rather than selecting solely by hopper size or bag price. Offer measured portions where you can check feeding activity. Sinking food can still be missed or taken by koi, so keep checking that the target fish receives it and that leftovers are not accumulating.
Choosing Sturgeon & Sterlet Food
Sturgeon feeding needs differ from the koi in the same pond. Use the sturgeon food’s own directions and observe its feeding area. Offer competing fish their food separately first where necessary, then check that the sinking pellets reach the intended fish. Do not automatically stop feeding every species because koi activity has slowed.

Making sure the sturgeon gets its food
In a mixed pond, feed the other fish separately first where needed, then offer the sturgeon pellets in an area you can observe. Keep checking that the intended fish receive the food.
Use the selected sturgeon food’s own seasonal directions. Do not copy a koi wheatgerm threshold or stop all feeding simply because the koi have slowed down. Adjust portions to what the sturgeon actually eat and remove leftovers.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.
Common questions
How do I stop koi eating the sturgeon’s food?
Observe a separate feeding area and check that sinking pellets reach the sturgeon. Distributing the koi ration separately may help, but the result must be checked in your own pond.
Can sturgeon eat an ordinary sinking koi pellet?
Select a food intended for sturgeon or sterlet. Feeding depth alone does not establish that a recipe meets the fish’s needs.
Do sturgeon foods all use the same temperature guidance?
No. Use the directions for the named species-specific food and monitor activity. Do not automatically apply a koi wheatgerm or growth-food threshold to it.
