Build a feeding routine around the pond
Measure water temperature in the pond. Begin with small portions and watch what is eaten before adding more. Reduce feeding when appetite falls or water quality deteriorates. Increase the ration gradually as conditions improve, particularly after a quiet winter period or a change to the filter.
Check that smaller or quieter fish receive food as well as the most active feeders. For sinking food, observe the area below the surface. Count any treats within the daily ration and remove uneaten food.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.

How do I stop koi eating the sturgeon’s food?
Observe a separate feeding area and check that sinking pellets reach the sturgeon. Distributing the koi ration separately may help, but the result must be checked in your own pond.
Can sturgeon eat an ordinary sinking koi pellet?
Select a food intended for sturgeon or sterlet. Feeding depth alone does not establish that a recipe meets the fish’s needs.
Do sturgeon foods all use the same temperature guidance?
No. Use the directions for the named species-specific food and monitor activity. Do not automatically apply a koi wheatgerm or growth-food threshold to it.
