Burtons Bio Tank 1000
Large moving bed biological filter chamber designed to increase biological filtration capacity in pond filtration systems.
The Burtons Bio Tank 1000 is a large and highly effective moving bed biological filter designed to increase the biological filtration capacity of pond filtration systems. Burtons Aquatics designs and manufactures this robust bio chamber in the UK, ensuring excellent build quality and long term reliability.
Biological filtration plays a vital role in maintaining stable pond water conditions. As fish produce waste and organic debris break down, harmful compounds such as ammonia and nitrite enter the water. Beneficial bacteria colonise biological filter media and convert these compounds into less harmful substances. As a result, the pond remains safe and healthy for fish.
The Bio Tank 1000 provides space for between 100 and 150 litres of moving bed filter media. When combined with aeration, the media tumbles freely inside the chamber. This movement creates a highly oxygenated environment where beneficial bacteria can efficiently process waste.
The chamber has a maximum flow rate of 15,000 litres per hour. However, the recommended operating flow rate is between 10,000 and 12,000 litres per hour. Therefore, the Burtons Bio Tank 1000 is ideal for medium sized pond filtration systems. In addition, it works extremely well as a biological stage following a drum filter.
Designed for Moving Bed Biological Filtration
The Burtons Bio Tank 1000 is designed specifically for moving bed biological filtration systems.
Inside the chamber, aeration causes the biological filter media to circulate continuously. As a result, the media remains suspended and moves freely inside the tank. At the same time, oxygen rich water constantly passes across the bacterial biofilm.
As the media circulates and tumbles, beneficial bacteria remain highly active. Consequently, the bacteria can break down ammonia and nitrite more efficiently. In addition, the constant movement helps maintain a thin and healthy biofilm layer. This prevents clogging and ensures reliable biological filtration.
Therefore, moving bed filtration provides a highly efficient way to maintain stable water quality in ponds and koi pond filtration systems.
Optimised Media Performance
The Bio Tank 1000 can hold between 100 and 150 litres of fluidised biological filter media.
For optimal filtration performance, Burtons recommends using a mixture of Bio Flo+ Media and Bio Tube Media. Because the two media types have different shapes and structures, they interact as they circulate inside the chamber.
As the media moves, the pieces gently collide and bounce against each other. This increases the tumbling or boiling motion within the tank. Consequently, oxygen circulation improves and beneficial bacteria remain highly active.
The increased movement also helps maintain a thin biofilm layer while preventing debris from accumulating on the media. As a result, the filter processes waste efficiently and maintains stable water conditions.
Benched Side Design for Improved Circulation
The Burtons Bio Tank 1000 features a benched internal design that improves water circulation within the chamber.
These internal contours guide water flow through the tank and help create a natural circular movement. This improves the tumbling motion of the filter media and ensures the entire media volume remains active.
As a result, beneficial bacteria receive a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. This helps maximise biological filtration performance and improves overall pond water quality.
Flexible Installation Options
The Burtons Bio Tank 1000 offers flexible installation options to suit different pond filtration systems.
The tank can be installed at water level in gravity fed filtration systems. Alternatively, it can be positioned above water level for pump fed filtration systems.
This flexibility makes the Bio Tank 1000 suitable for a wide range of pond setups, including systems that use Burtons drum filters.
Recommended Air Pump
To operate a moving bed biological filter effectively, the filter media must remain constantly suspended and tumbling inside the chamber. This requires a reliable air pump capable of producing sufficient airflow to create a strong boiling motion within the filter.
For the Burtons Bio Tank 1000 we recommend using either the Charles Austen ET60 Air Pump or the Charles Austen ET80 Air Pump. Both pumps provide strong and reliable airflow which keeps the biological media fully fluidised while ensuring beneficial bacteria receive plenty of oxygen.
Using the correct air pump ensures the filter media circulates freely inside the chamber. As a result, the biological filtration stage can efficiently break down ammonia and nitrite within the pond.
The Charles Austen ET range is well known for reliability, energy efficiency and quiet operation, making it an excellent choice for pond filtration systems.
