What do A and AO mean?

Standard ET models are ideal for normal continuous aeration. A models include a built in low pressure alarm with a buzzer and LED warning. AO models include the same alarm plus a 230V output cable for connecting to an external alarm panel or beacon. A and AO models are often used on sewage treatment plants and septic tank systems because the pump may be hidden away and a fault may not be noticed quickly, but they can also be useful on pond systems where extra warning is helpful.

Air pumps, diffusers and airline

For pond and lake aeration, the air pump is only one part of the system. It should be matched with the correct diffuser station, weighted airline and manifold. As a practical guide, each 10 inch diffuser disc normally works best with around 40 to 50 litres per minute of air. For Charles Austen air pumps, 8mm or 10mm airline is normally the better choice for larger ponds, longer runs and diffuser stations.

Which Charles Austen air pump do I need?

For most ponds, start with the standard ET range. Choose the output based on pond size, depth, filter demand and diffuser layout. For lower running costs, compare the ETX ECO models. For backup and temporary use, look at the CP battery backup range.

Do I need an A or AO model for a pond?

Most pond customers choose the standard ET model. A and AO models are more common for sewage treatment plants and septic tanks, but they can be useful on ponds where you want an alarm if airflow is lost.

Are BF wave makers the same as air pumps?

No. BF wave makers are submersible water movement devices. They create underwater current and agitation, but they are not a like for like replacement for an air pump, weighted airline and diffuser station.

Choosing the right airline

Small air stones and short runs may use 4mm airline, but larger pond air pumps normally work better with 8mm or 10mm airline. Larger internal diameter airline reduces restriction, especially where the pump is feeding diffuser stations, long runs or deeper water.

Splitting airflow with manifolds

Air manifolds allow one air pump to feed more than one airline or diffuser. This is useful when aerating multiple areas of a pond, running several air stones or balancing air between diffuser stations.

Air stones and diffusers
