Choosing Koi Treats
Dried insects, prepared insect pellets and mixed treats are not nutritionally identical. Check whether the exact product is a complete or supplementary feed, its feeding temperature and any soaking directions. Build a feeding routine around the pond
Measure water temperature in the pond. Begin with small portions and watch what is eaten before adding more. Reduce feeding when appetite falls or water quality deteriorates. Increase the ration gradually as conditions improve, particularly after a quiet winter period or a change to the filter.
Check that smaller or quieter fish receive food as well as the most active feeders. For sinking food, observe the area below the surface. Count any treats within the daily ration and remove uneaten food.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.
Common questions
Can koi treats replace the normal food?
Use treats within the total ration alongside an appropriate complete diet. Different insect, shrimp and mixed treats have different nutrient declarations; they are not interchangeable main diets.
Do silkworm pupae need soaking?
Follow the exact product’s instructions. Evolution Aqua and Pro-Line give a half-hour warm-water soak; AquaSource also advises soaking but does not publish that same duration on its product page.
Can I feed treats in cold water?
Check each product’s temperature guidance. AquaSource recommends above 14°C for its prawns, Gammarus and river shrimp; Evolution Aqua’s silkworm guidance starts at 15°C. Do not treat all dried foods as having one limit.
