Choosing wheatgerm food for your pond
Looking for food as your pond starts to cool? Browse floating and sinking wheatgerm foods from a range of koi-food brands. Choose a pellet size your fish can comfortably eat, and check the feeding directions for your pond’s water temperature.
Wheatgerm foods are often chosen for spring and autumn, when koi are eating less than they do in warmer water. The name alone does not tell you how cold the pond can be before feeding should stop: that depends on the food you choose and how your fish are behaving.
Before you choose a bag
- Floating or sinking? Floating pellets make it easier to watch what your koi eat. With sinking food, keep an eye on what happens below the surface so leftovers do not go unnoticed.
- Pellet size: choose one the smaller fish in your pond can comfortably manage, rather than buying for the biggest koi alone.
- Pond temperature: use a pond thermometer and follow the directions for the exact food. Foods from the same brand can have different feeding limits.
- Pack size: buy an amount you can use while fresh. Compare the price per kilogram, but remember that a larger bag is only good value if it suits your feeding rate.

Do not borrow a feeding threshold from another brand
Measure the actual pond temperature and follow the food’s own directions. Evolution Aqua’s current Wheatgerm page describes an all-year diet but its feeding section says above 18°C; that conflict is flagged in the comparison rather than replaced with an assumed lower limit. No single winter temperature applies to this whole category.
Choosing Wheatgerm Koi Food
Wheatgerm is an ingredient, not a universal temperature rating. Manufacturer thresholds vary, and floating and sinking foods can have different nutrient declarations. Some 1 kg value packs also use different recipes from a brand’s bulk food. Check the supplied pack before transferring feeding advice between products.

Build a feeding routine around the pond
Measure water temperature in the pond. Begin with small portions and watch what is eaten before adding more. Reduce feeding when appetite falls or water quality deteriorates. Increase the ration gradually as conditions improve, particularly after a quiet winter period or a change to the filter.
Check that smaller or quieter fish receive food as well as the most active feeders. For sinking food, observe the area below the surface. Count any treats within the daily ration and remove uneaten food.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.
Common questions
Is all wheatgerm food suitable below 5°C?
Use the exact product’s lower limit. The word wheatgerm identifies an ingredient and does not establish a universal minimum temperature. Do not feed inactive fish simply because a food has winter positioning.
Are floating and sinking wheatgerm recipes identical?
They can differ substantially. AquaSource’s floating and sinking wheatgerm foods have different protein and fat declarations. Read the selected version’s product page.
Can I mix wheatgerm with the normal food?
A gradual change can help establish the new ration, but both foods must suit the water conditions. Follow any product-specific mixing directions and keep the total amount matched to appetite.
