40W and 80W high-output UV modules for compatible drum and filter chambers
Filtreau amalgam modules put high-output UV-C directly into a suitable enclosed filter chamber. Our current range contains 40W and 80W units for compatible koi-pond, drum-filter and professional filtration systems.
The 80W Filtreau specification publishes a lamp life of up to 12,000 hours and a recommended flow of 22 m3/h at a 30 mJ/cm2 dose. Those figures are useful only when the lamp is installed in the intended chamber with clean quartz and the correct control gear.
A submersible amalgam unit is powerful and compact, but it is not a lamp to hang visibly in open water. The installation must prevent all exposure to UV-C and protect the electrical connections.
Filtreau 40W and 80W Modules
The Filtreau 40W amalgam module suits the smaller compatible duty; the Filtreau 80W amalgam module is the higher-output choice. Select from the current Filtreau chamber, dose and flow information, not a simple litres-per-watt rule.
If fitting to an existing drum filter, verify clearance through the mounting point and around moving parts.
Why Amalgam Performance Lasts Longer
Amalgam lamps are designed for high output and longer useful service than many conventional low-pressure UV lamps. They still age, and the quartz can still become coated. Record running hours and inspect the sleeve as part of routine filter maintenance.
Use the correct Filtreau ballast and replacement lamp. A visually similar tube may have different electrical characteristics.
Chamber Safety and Access
Mount the module only in an enclosed compatible chamber. Isolate power and water before opening it. Arrange cabling so it cannot chafe or sit in an unsafe connection, and leave enough room to remove the lamp without striking the drum or media.
Our advice: send a photograph and dimensions when retrofitting a Filtreau module. Chamber geometry matters.

Will a UV clarifier remove blanket weed?
No. UV-C can help with single-celled algae carried through the unit, which is what causes green water. Attached algae and blanket weed need a different approach.
Does clearer water mean the pond filter is no longer needed?
No. UV treatment clumps suspended algae, but the mechanical filter still has to collect it and the biological filter still processes fish waste.
Can I choose a UV only by wattage?
Not reliably. Pond volume, flow rate, fish load, sunlight, chamber design and the manufacturer’s recommended dose all matter.
Why does the quartz sleeve need cleaning?
Limescale and biofilm reduce the UV reaching the water even when the lamp is working. A clean sleeve is essential to useful output.
Can I look at a lit UV-C lamp?
No. UV-C can injure eyes and skin. Isolate the electrical supply before opening the unit and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Should the UV run before or after the biological filter?
Follow the system and manufacturer layout. The important points are the permitted flow, correct orientation, full water coverage and safe access for servicing.
Can you check which model suits my pond?
Yes. Tell us the pond volume, fish stock, pump flow, pipe size, filter model and whether the pond is in full sun.
When should I replace the lamp?
Use the interval stated for the exact lamp and unit. UV-C output falls with age even when the lamp still produces visible light.
