Filtreau Combi Filter PF20 – Pump Fed

Drum cleaning and biological treatment for an existing pump-fed pond

The Filtreau PF20 brings automatic drum cleaning and moving-bed biological filtration together in a pump-fed system, with UV-C selected separately. A circulation pump supplies dirty water to the filter and the treated water flows back to the pond by gravity.

Included media: this package comes with approximately 100 litres of moving-bed media. Allow for this included quantity before ordering any extra media; an appropriately sized external air pump is still required.

The drum removes suspended solids before water reaches the moving-bed section. That reduces the amount of coarse dirt the biological stage has to deal with and allows the media to concentrate on processing dissolved fish waste once it is mature.

How the automatic rinse system works

Screen loading changes the operating water level and starts the automatic rinse cycle. The drum rotates while the spray bar clears the collected dirt into the waste channel. The controller manages the sequence; it does not generate cleaning pressure by itself.

A rinse pump is included with this package to supply the drum-cleaning system. It has a different job from the circulation pump that feeds pond water into the filter. Follow the supplied installation instructions for its water supply, connection and protection from dry running.

Setting up the moving bed

The biological media must suit the chamber’s retention fittings and be loaded with room to circulate. A separate air pump supplies the fitted diffuser. Select on useful airflow at the working depth and observe the movement throughout the bed after installation.

Do not use the whole chamber volume as a fill target, or add static matting into the moving section without a separate designed area. Allow for any media included in the chosen package before buying extras. A sensible loading that moves evenly is more useful than an overcrowded bed.

New media needs time to establish. Test ammonia and nitrite and build feeding gradually, particularly if the PF20 is replacing an older mature filter. The automatic drum can be working correctly while the biological stage is still developing.

Choosing UV and circulation equipment

UV-C is not included with the PF20. Choose a separate unit for the pond and the actual flow through it if suspended green-water algae need controlling. The UV does not replace the moving bed or remove dissolved fish waste.

Maximum filter flow is 20,000 litres/hour. Check the pond pump’s output after lift and friction, and give the two 110 mm outlets a return route that can carry the water freely. A restrictive return will limit the installation regardless of the feed pump’s capacity.

Comparing and installing the filter

Compare the Combi-NEXT Pump Fed with rinse pump if you prefer a package with internal cleaning pump and UV-C. Confirm the exact PF20 housing and connection positions before constructing permanent supports or pipework.

Leave access to the drum, media and waste route. Inspect the screen and spray nozzles routinely, isolate power before servicing and keep any added UV unit correctly shielded and installed. It is much easier to plan that access now than to move a working filter later.
