Automatic solids removal before your biological filter
The gravity-fed Filtreau Drum Filter takes over the regular task of separating solids from pond water. Its fine screen catches waste ahead of the biological filter, and the automatic cleaning system carries that waste to drain. An integrated 40W amalgam UV-C adds green-water control without a separate inline UV housing.
This is a mechanical drum filter, not a combi with a built-in moving-bed chamber. It makes sense when you already have a suitable biological stage to retain, or want to choose that stage separately. For a filter that brings both functions together, compare the Filtreau combi models.
How the automatic cleaning works
Pond water reaches the dirty side of the drum through the gravity inlet pipework and passes through the 70-micron screen. Solids remain on the dirty side instead of travelling into the biological filter. As the screen loads, the change in water level triggers a rinse. The motor rotates the drum while the spray bar washes the screen into its waste channel.
The cleaning cycle reduces routine manual cleaning, but it is not a reason to leave the filter unchecked. Leaves in the waste channel, blocked spray nozzles or a poorly set water level can still affect operation. Accessible valves, a clear waste route and room to service the screen are worthwhile parts of the installation.
Choose the cleaning pump separately
The supplied filter has the drum drive, automatic controller, spray bar and 40W UV-C. Its pressure-cleaning pump is a separate item. Select the compatible T.I.P. pressure cleaning pump, FS1987 if you do not already have a suitable wash-pump arrangement. The existing product add-on provides a straightforward way to order it with the drum.
The wash pump and the pond circulation pump have different jobs. The wash pump supplies pressure to the spray bar during a cleaning cycle; the circulation pump moves water through the pond system. A large pond pump is not automatically an alternative to the specified pressure pump. Use suitable pressure-rated connections for the cleaning circuit and follow the Filtreau drum installation manual.
Keep the biological filtration working
Removing solid waste helps the next stage stay cleaner, but it does not remove the dissolved ammonia produced by fish. Provide a properly sized biological stage after the drum and sufficient aeration for that stage. Hel-X or Japanese matting belongs in a chamber designed to retain and support it, not loose inside the drum housing.
When replacing an existing mechanical filter, retain established biological media where practical and avoid cleaning all of it aggressively at the same time. Monitor ammonia and nitrite during the changeover. The 40W UV-C helps with suspended algae; clear water should not be mistaken for proof that the biological system has recovered or matured.

Installing at pond level
The filter must sit at the correct operating level so water can enter by gravity. The circulation pump draws from the clean side after the filter. Properly sized drain lines, isolation valves and restrained use of bends help preserve the available flow. A 20,000-litre-per-hour maximum does not mean any pair of inlet pipes will deliver that amount regardless of their length and layout.
Check the model drawing for the finished water level and connection centres before fixing the base or pipework. Allow for lid opening and service access, not just the outside footprint. If the pond pump will feed a raised filter instead, choose the pump-fed version rather than adapting this one on the strength of a similar appearance.
Maintenance and replacement parts
Inspect the screen, sensor, spray bar and waste outlet regularly. Investigate repeated or unusually long cleaning cycles instead of assuming that more washing will solve the cause. Disconnect the electrical supply before servicing and follow the manual for safe UV and screen maintenance.
Order replacements using the filter’s model code and the component fitted. Filtreau supplies several screen sizes, motor generations and UV types, so a part described simply as a Filtreau spare is not enough to establish compatibility. Keep the purchase record and a photograph of the rating label with the installation details; both help identify the correct part later.
