Compare growth foods fairly
A declared percentage and a guaranteed minimum are not the same kind of figure. Protein, fat, ingredients, feeding temperature and the pond’s capacity to handle the ration all matter. Compare prices for the exact recipe and pellet size rather than assuming a cheaper kilogram or higher protein level must produce better growth.
Choosing Growth Koi Food
Growth foods have different protein and fat levels and different feeding thresholds. Burtons Growth is positioned above 18°C, Kusuri Growth above 20°C and Hikari UK Saki-Hikari Growth from 16°C. These examples show why one generic “summer food” rule is not enough. Increase feeding gradually and check water quality.

Introducing a growth food
Change the food gradually and watch how the koi take it. Switching to a growth recipe does not mean the pond needs a sudden increase in the amount fed.
Build portions around appetite, the product’s instructions and water quality. Make sure smaller or quieter koi receive food too. Reduce the ration if food is left behind or conditions deteriorate, and keep up with filter care as feeding increases.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.

When can I start feeding a growth formula?
Check its own water-temperature threshold and introduce the ration gradually. Burtons Growth is positioned above 18°C and Kusuri Growth above 20°C, while other growth foods have different guidance.
Will a higher protein figure produce faster growth?
Growth depends on the complete diet, genetics, fish condition and pond environment. Compare fat and the full formulation as well as protein, and keep the ration within the pond’s filtration capacity.
Should I increase food when I change to a growth diet?
Do not automatically increase it. Observe the fish, introduce changes gradually and check water quality. Remove uneaten food and reduce the ration if appetite or conditions deteriorate.
