Meet Matt Adlington
My name is Matthew Adlington and I’m the founder of That Pond Guy.
My passion for ponds started long before the business was established. Growing up, I spent countless hours helping family members maintain and improve their ponds, developing an interest in fish, water gardening and pond construction from an early age.
Looking back, it perhaps isn’t surprising that I ended up working with ponds. Before I was born, my parents met whilst working at Eden Park Garden Centre in Sittingbourne, and gardening has always been a big part of family life. My father later ran a cut flower business and both of my parents have always been keen gardeners.
As a child, I grew up around gardens, fish and water. My dad had a small koi pond, my grandparents also had a garden pond and I had my own goldfish pond which I was responsible for looking after, although I certainly knew a lot less about pond keeping back then than I do today. I also kept a tropical aquarium indoors and spent countless hours learning about fish, filtration and water quality. Outside of ponds and aquariums, I was a keen fisherman and spent much of my spare time around lakes, rivers and ponds, fascinated by fish and the natural world, even if I wasn’t always very successful at catching anything!
Looking back through old family photos, it’s clear that ponds have always been part of my life. Long before I started a business, I was spending weekends helping clean and maintain family ponds, learning about water quality and developing the practical skills that would eventually shape my career.
Building Ponds Before There Was a Business
Long before That Pond Guy existed, I was already spending much of my spare time designing, building and improving ponds for family and friends.
One of the earliest projects was helping build my mum’s pond, a project that taught me valuable lessons about pond construction, filtration and creating a pond that could be enjoyed for many years to come.
Looking back, these early projects helped lay the foundations for the business we have today. They reinforced the importance of quality workmanship, careful planning and building ponds that are both practical and enjoyable to own.
While the scale of our projects has changed significantly since then, the principles remain exactly the same.
The Pond That Changed Everything
In 2018, I built my first proper koi pond. While I had spent years helping maintain and improve ponds for family members, this was the first project where I could bring together everything I had learned about pond construction, filtration, water quality and fish keeping.
Like many koi keepers, I quickly became fascinated by every aspect of pond ownership. I spent countless hours researching filtration systems, water chemistry, fish health, pond design and construction techniques, always looking for ways to improve and learn more.
What started as a hobby soon became an obsession. The more I learned, the more passionate I became about creating healthy, reliable ponds that could be enjoyed for years to come.
Looking back, this was probably the project that made me realise I wanted ponds to become a much bigger part of my life. Many of the techniques, lessons and principles I still use today were first developed whilst building and maintaining this pond.
From Passion Project to Business
Following the construction of my first koi pond, I found myself spending more and more time helping friends, family and local pond owners with their ponds. What began as occasional advice and small projects quickly developed into regular pond cleaning, maintenance and upgrade work. Before long, evenings, weekends and annual leave were increasingly being spent working on ponds rather than relaxing.
At the time, I was working for Kent Police whilst growing the business in my spare time. Many of the early jobs were completed around shifts, with equipment transported in the back of my car and every spare hour dedicated to building a reputation for quality workmanship and honest advice.
As demand continued to grow, it became clear that what had started as a passion project had the potential to become something much bigger.
In 2021, I made the decision to launch That Pond Guy full time and focus entirely on helping pond owners create healthier, more enjoyable ponds.

Although That Pond Guy started as a one man operation, it has grown into a dedicated team of pond specialists who share the same commitment to quality workmanship, honest advice and excellent customer service.
Today, our cleaning, maintenance and construction teams work throughout Kent, London, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire and Hampshire, helping customers care for everything from small wildlife ponds and garden ponds through to large koi ponds, commercial water features and lakes.
Our continued growth has allowed us to invest in specialist equipment, dedicated service vehicles and a skilled team capable of delivering projects of all sizes whilst maintaining the personal approach that helped build our reputation in the first place.
While the business has evolved significantly since those early days, our values remain exactly the same. We believe in treating every pond as if it were our own and providing the same level of care and attention to detail regardless of the size of the project.

If we wouldn’t use a product on our own ponds or recommend it to our customers, we won’t sell it.
