Pond Filter Media for Biological and Mechanical Filtration

Media that fits inside a filter is not automatically suitable for it

Pond filter media is often sold as though a larger surface-area number answers every question. In practice, media also needs the correct flow, oxygen, movement and cleaning method. A buoyant moving-bed carrier, a sheet of Japanese matting and porous shower media all support filtration, but they are not interchangeable.

Our moving-bed choices include Aqua Source BIOFLO, Biopipe+, Burtons Bio Flo+ and Evolution Aqua K+. These are designed to move in an aerated chamber so that protected surfaces support biofilm while older growth and fine debris can be shed.

Japanese matting and fixed media

Japanese matting is a durable 40 mm sheet material that can provide both mechanical interception and biological surface in suitable gravity filters. It can be cut to fit, but the chamber still needs open flow and practical access for cleaning. Packed too tightly, even good media becomes a restriction.

Shower, block and tube media

Burtons Far Infrared Shower Media, Bio Block and Bio Tube products are aimed at open showers or fixed biological stages. The void space and water distribution matter as much as the nominal quantity. We prefer an evenly wetted, oxygen-rich bed over an overfilled tray with dry patches and channels.

How to Choose Pond Filter Media

For a moving bed

Use a purpose-made buoyant carrier and respect the chamber’s maximum fill. The air pump and diffuser must keep the entire bed rolling; media sitting motionless in a corner is not working as intended.

For a static biological chamber

Japanese matting, blocks and tubes can provide robust fixed surfaces. Arrange them so water cannot simply bypass the media and so every section can be removed or flushed without dismantling the whole filter.

For a Bakki shower

Use media suited to trickle filtration, with enough open space for air and water. Check the total weight when wet and ensure the shower trays and support are rated for it.

Replacing existing media

Do not replace all mature biological media just because it looks stained. If it remains structurally sound and flows correctly, the biofilm is valuable. When changing media type, phase the work and monitor ammonia and nitrite.

What is the best pond filter media?

The best media is the one designed for the chamber and job: moving biological bed, fixed bio stage, shower or mechanical capture.

What is protected surface area?

It is internal media surface sheltered from excessive scouring and intended to support stable biofilm.

Can BIOFLO, Biopipe+ and K+ be used in any filter?

They are primarily moving-bed carrier media. Confirm chamber volume, buoyancy, retention screens, fill percentage and aeration before use.

Can Japanese matting be cut to size?

Yes, but leave a sensible fit so water passes through the matting rather than bypassing or forcing it out of position.

How much media should I buy?

Use the filter or chamber specification and the biological load. More than the permitted fill can make performance worse.

Should new moving-bed media float immediately?

New media can behave differently until wetted and colonised. Follow the manufacturer’s commissioning guidance and keep it securely retained.

Can I mix old and new biological media?

Yes, and retaining mature media can help seed the new material. Keep monitoring water quality during the change.

Should I use the maximum pond-size rating?

Treat it as a best-case reference. Fish load, feeding, sunlight, depth and maintenance all affect the sensible working size.

What is the difference between mechanical and biological filtration?

Mechanical stages remove solids. Biological stages provide oxygenated surfaces for bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite. A good pond system normally needs both.

How long does a new biological filter take to mature?

There is no single date. Temperature, pH, oxygen and food load all matter, so test ammonia and nitrite while the system settles.

Will a bigger filter cure green water?

Not necessarily. Green water is usually dealt with by a correctly sized and maintained UVC working with suitable filtration and flow.

How often should pond filters be cleaned?

Clean according to restriction and waste load rather than a rigid calendar. Mechanical stages need attention before they choke; biological media should be handled more gently.

Can I wash biological media with tap water?

Avoid heavily chlorinated water on established biological media. Use the cleaning method recommended for the exact filter and media.

Does the filter need to run continuously?

For a stocked pond, biological filtration and circulation are normally continuous during the active season. Follow the equipment and winter-management instructions.

Can you check whether a filter will suit my pond?

Yes. We will want the real pond volume, fish stock, feeding, existing pipework, pump position and preferred maintenance routine.
