Oase Hel-X 13 Bio Media 25 Litres
Protected biological filter media for compatible moving-bed pond filters
Oase Hel-X 13 is a biological filter medium designed to provide a large colonisation area for the microorganisms that process dissolved waste in a pond filtration system. This is the genuine Oase 25-litre pack, product number 42904. It is a practical size for adding the specified quantity of media to a compatible filter chamber, without ordering a much larger bulk pack.
The individual carriers are designed for fluidised-bed filtration, often called a moving bed. In a correctly arranged chamber, aeration keeps the media circulating while water passes through the biological stage. The protected surfaces within the carriers provide places for the developing biofilm, while the movement helps the medium work as part of an actively aerated filter rather than as a tightly packed static block.

Understanding the surface-area figures
Total surface area and protected surface area describe different measurements. The total includes the exposed surfaces of the carriers, while the protected figure refers to the area sheltered within their structure. Oase’s current product information gives 955m²/m³ total and 806m²/m³ protected surface. When comparing filter media, compare like-for-like figures rather than setting one product’s total area against another product’s protected area.
For a 25-litre pack, those figures correspond mathematically to approximately 23.9m² of total surface and 20.2m² of protected surface. They describe the available structure, not a guarantee that a newly opened bag already contains a mature bacterial colony. The biological stage needs time and suitable operating conditions to establish itself after installation.
Choosing the right media quantity
Start with the instructions for the filter chamber. Its specified initial fill and maximum media volume are more useful than filling all available space. A moving-bed chamber needs room for the carriers to circulate, so adding more than the permitted amount can work against the intended movement. Check the required air supply, retention screens and water flow as part of the same decision.
Oase’s feeding guidance of 170g per day for 25 litres is a biological loading reference. It is not an instruction to feed that amount immediately after installing new media, nor a universal pond-volume rating. Fish stocking, temperature, oxygen supply, water conditions and the maturity of the filter all influence how the complete system performs. Continue testing the water and adjust feeding to the pond’s actual condition.
For a complete biological stage, compare our Oase ProfiClear Premium XL Moving Bed Module with Hel-X. Confirm the quantity already included with a new filter before buying additional bags, and follow that particular module’s capacity rather than assuming every ProfiClear chamber has the same filling limit.
Mechanical filtration and aeration still matter
Hel-X 13 is intended to support biological treatment. It does not replace the separate removal of leaves, fish waste and other suspended solids before water reaches the biological stage. Oase describes its use with drum pre-separation, where the upstream mechanical filter removes debris and the media can operate without a routine media-cleaning requirement in that arrangement.
That does not make the entire filter maintenance-free. Check the mechanical stage, air supply and the movement of the media, and follow the service instructions for the chamber. A blocked air line or poor circulation can change how the biological stage operates even when the media itself is still in good condition. Our pond air pumps and pond filters ranges can help when planning the surrounding equipment.
Installing and establishing new Hel-X
Use the filter manufacturer’s filling and start-up procedure. Keep new media away from cleaning chemicals and confirm that the chamber’s outlet retains the carriers before operating the system. Check that the intended quantity can circulate freely and that the air diffuser and water connections are working as designed.
The white carriers gradually take on a brownish appearance as the biofilm develops. This is a useful visible change, but colour alone does not measure the pond’s ammonia or nitrite. Keep using water tests to assess the biological filter, particularly after adding fish, changing feeding or replacing a substantial amount of established media. Avoid discarding all mature media as a routine cosmetic clean simply because it is no longer white.
Is this suitable for my existing filter?
Check that your filter is designed to use this type of loose biological carrier and has the appropriate media retention and aeration. Do not assume that any foam filter, bead filter or static chamber can accept it without changes. If you would like help, contact That Pond Guy with the filter model, current media quantity and the reason you want to add or replace media. We can then help you select a suitable amount for the actual equipment.
