It can support beneficial bacteria while also intercepting suspended material, depending on whether it is installed submerged, in a shower or as a fitted cartridge.

Filter media only works across the water that reaches it. Pack it too tightly or leave gaps around the edge and the flow will bypass the intended surface. Measure the chamber and plan support, retention and cleaning access before cutting or stacking the media.
