A substantial combi filter for a high-flow gravity-fed system
The Excellent Combi 80/100 XXL Gravity is a substantial filtration system for a substantial pond. A 650 mm-diameter, 800 mm-long drum provides the mechanical stage, followed by generous space for biological treatment and two 80W high-output UV-C units.
Its 2,760 Ă— 1,515 mm footprint is part of the buying decision. This is equipment to design a filter room around, not simply squeeze into the space left over after the pond has been built. Access for delivery, lid opening, media handling and servicing should be settled before the installation is committed.
A coordinated high-flow system
The gravity-fed XXL can handle up to 100,000 litres/hour, with nine 110 mm inlets and four 110 mm outlets. Multiple branches allow drains and skimmers to be connected and isolated separately. The useful flow still depends on their resistance, operating levels and the arrangement of the clean-side pumps.
The 120-micron screen captures solids, and the float-triggered cleaning cycle runs the drum motor and internal wash pump. Waste leaves through a dedicated rinse route. At this scale, the waste discharge needs proper planning too: automatic cleaning is only effective when the removed material can leave freely.
Biological media is a significant part of the installation
The optional media arrangement lists 500 litres of Hel-X and 10 m² of Japanese matting. That is a much larger quantity than the smaller Excellent combis, and it needs an air system designed for the installed media and chamber depth. The fitted air bars are distribution components, not an included air pump.
Our high-quality Japanese matting options supply one or two uncut 1.2 Ă— 1 m Top Grade sheets. Two sheets total 2.4 m² before trimming, so they are not a complete 10 m² XXL matting package. A full layout needs a measured cutting plan, allowance for water passages and access to lift the panels out for cleaning.
Do not treat chamber space as an invitation to add unlimited media. A moving bed needs open water and even movement. Biological performance develops with maturation and depends on feeding load, temperature and water conditions as well as media quantity.
Twin UV-C and sensible system limits
Two 80W high-output UV-C units help control suspended algae on the larger water circuit. They do not remove dissolved fish waste or make the water safe without biological treatment. Keep the exact HO lamp references when ordering spares; an amalgam lamp of the same wattage is not automatically interchangeable.
If width is the limiting factor, compare the 80/100 XXL Inline Gravity, which uses a different body and connection arrangement. It is not the same filter with its chambers simply turned around.

Installation that remains serviceable
Provide full base support, safe access around the body and clear routes to remove both UV assemblies. Design the branch valves and waste pipe so a single maintenance job does not require dismantling a large part of the filter room.
The XXL trickle add-on has a separate maximum flow and must be treated as an additional stage. Follow the Excellent operating manual, establish the biological media progressively and commission the system below its maximum before increasing circulation.
