The Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 50/65 XL Pump Fed Inline is a heavy duty high capacity filtration system designed for large koi ponds and ornamental installations. Built for inline pump fed configurations, this XL combi drum delivers powerful mechanical and biological filtration for demanding pond environments.

This model suits koi ponds up to approximately 65000 litres and ornamental ponds up to around 130000 litres, depending on stocking levels. With a maximum flow rate of up to 65000 litres per hour, it handles high fish loads and elevated turnover requirements with ease.

As part of the XL series, this unit features a significantly larger body, expanded inlet capacity and an enlarged biological chamber. Therefore, it suits formal raised ponds, high end koi systems and larger commercial environments where reliability and performance are critical.

Heavy Duty Mechanical Filtration with Integrated UV

At the core of the system sits a high capacity stainless steel drum fitted with a 120 micron screen. This screen removes suspended solids before they reach the biological chamber. Because the drum captures waste early, it protects the bio media and improves long term efficiency.

When debris restricts water flow, the stainless steel float switch activates the automatic cleaning cycle. The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor rotates the drum while high pressure spray nozzles clean the mesh. The internal RVS 5 bar 600W flushing pump powers the wash cycle. As a result, the filter maintains consistent performance with minimal manual intervention.

The integrated 80W high output immersion UV C operates at 253.7nm. It helps control green water algae and harmful microorganisms while supporting clear and healthy pond conditions.

XL Biological Capacity and Aeration

The 50/65 XL model is specifically designed for moving bed media such as Hel-X or Hel-X. The enlarged biological chamber supports high media volumes. For systems of this size, using approximately 200 to 250 litres of Hel-X is a common starting point. This ensures sufficient space for the media to tumble freely and operate efficiently.

You can also install Japanese matting within the chamber. Many pond keepers combine static matting with moving media to provide both dynamic and stable surface areas for beneficial bacteria. This approach improves biological stability and supports heavy feeding regimes.

These filters are supplied without media. Therefore, Hel-X and Japanese mats must be purchased separately to complete the biological setup.

To support such a large media volume, the filter includes an integrated high capacity aeration system. The XL model typically features multiple air bars, for example 4 x 50mm x 300mm air bars, to ensure the entire chamber remains fully oxygenated. We recommend the Charles Austen ET200 air pump to provide sufficient airflow for optimal media movement.

Keeping the media in constant motion prevents dead zones and reduces the risk of anaerobic bacteria developing. Consequently, the system maintains healthier water conditions, which is essential in large koi ponds with significant bio load.

The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor features double seals to prevent leaks and protect against moisture ingress. Meanwhile, the control box manages drum cleaning cycles for reliable long term operation.
