An inline XL combi for water supplied by pond pumps

The Excellent 50/65 Inline XL Pump Fed is a larger combi for a pond that supplies its filtration with circulation pumps. A 650 mm drum deals with solid waste, while biological chambers and 80W high-output UV-C provide the remaining treatment stages in a long, 850 mm-wide housing.

Its flow limit is 45,000 litres/hour. Use that pump-fed figure rather than the higher gravity-fed rating when selecting pumps and sizing the return. Even a large filter can overflow or run poorly if the water cannot leave as easily as it arrives.

Mechanical waste removal

The screen has a 120-micron aperture. As it loads, the change in water level starts an automatic rinse, operating the drum drive and internal pressure-cleaning pump. The spray bar removes dirt from the mesh and sends it to the waste outlet.

Keeping this stage ahead of the biological media reduces the solid material that would otherwise settle there. Inspect the waste path and screen routinely, particularly when seasonal debris or a heavy feeding regime increases the load.

The biological section needs room and air

An optional media arrangement pairs 200 litres of Hel-X with 4 m² of Japanese matting. The moving media must remain mobile under aeration; an overcrowded chamber is not an automatic increase in performance. The fitted air bars require an external air pump chosen for their depth and the media loading.

Our high-quality Japanese matting sheets measure 1.2 × 1 m per sheet. One or two uncut sheets can be added. Two give 2.4 m² before trimming, so they are not a full cartridge or the entire 4 m² arrangement. Keep panels accessible and leave the intended passages for water to move through them.

During maturation, monitor ammonia and nitrite and increase feeding gradually. UV-C deals with suspended green-water algae, not those dissolved nitrogen compounds. The combination of clear water, suitable oxygen levels and mature media is what matters.

Choosing the body that fits

The filter measures 2,254 × 850 × 1,005 mm. A longer, narrower body can be convenient beside an existing pond, but the return still needs enough fall and cross-section to carry the planned flow. Include the pump’s lifting height and pipe friction when checking its delivered output.

Compare the conventional 50/70 Pump Fed if a shorter, wider layout fits better. The XXL Inline Pump Fed is the larger alternative for a project with more space and a higher required flow.

Installation and ownership

Leave safe access to the lid and UV assembly, support the whole base and arrange waste drainage where it can be cleared. The Inline XL trickle add-on has a separate permitted flow, which needs to be reflected in the return design.

Commission the pump circuit gradually and observe the filter through several rinse cycles. Follow the Excellent manual when cleaning or replacing components; automatic washing makes maintenance lighter, not unnecessary.
