Compact Rotating Biological Drum Filtration System
The Mountain Tree 30/50 Low combines an automatically cleaned mechanical drum with a separate rotating biological stage and specialist Mountain Tree media. It brings these stages together for a gravity-fed koi pond while keeping the body just 750 mm high, making it a useful option where filter-room height is limited.
Its 750mm height is the low-profile feature; the 1773mm Ă— 1163mm footprint still needs a properly planned filter bay. Maximum flow is 50,000 litres per hour. The model’s koi pond rating is up to 50,000 litres, subject to feeding, stocking and the performance of the complete installation. Use those figures to narrow the choice, then check the pipework, pond load and service access before committing to a build.
Why the rotating biological stage matters
A conventional moving bed keeps loose plastic media in motion with air. This model takes a different approach: a dedicated biological drum rotates as part of the filtration system. The Mountain Tree arrangement uses Lotus Root Bacteria House media and Spiral Filter Mat to provide surfaces for bacterial growth.
It is the combination of mechanical waste removal and the biological stage that matters. The screen intercepts solids; the established bacteria process dissolved nitrogen waste. The filter also needs a suitable air supply and time to mature. A specialist media design does not mean a new pond can be stocked heavily straight away or that water tests can be skipped.
The supplied Mountain Tree media forms part of the rotating biological stage, so there is no need to add the Hel-X and Japanese-matting package offered for an empty conventional Excellent Combi. When the media eventually needs replacing, choose matching Mountain Tree components that fit the original support arrangement.
Automatic solids removal before the media
The mechanical drum uses a 120-micron screen with a 500 Ă— 400mm drum. When debris restricts the screen, the level control calls for a cleaning cycle and the built-in rinse pump feeds the spray bar. The waste channel carries the separated material out of the system.
The mechanical screen and rotating biological stage each have their own drive motor. If one stage stops turning, identifying which drum is affected will help us find the correct replacement part or arrange the right servicing advice.
The built-in 80W high-output UV-C helps control suspended algae and green water. When it is time for a replacement lamp, choose the matching Excellent high-output part. An 80W amalgam lamp from another range is not interchangeable simply because the wattage is the same.
What to include in the rest of the system
The Mountain Tree filter includes its internal screen-cleaning pump, controller, UV-C and specialist biological media arrangement. The pond circulation pump and external air supply are separate. Four fitted air diffusers distribute air within the filter, but they still need an appropriately sized air pump.
The Charles Austen ET150 is an option to assess against diffuser depth and the complete air demand. Do not assume the air pump’s free-air rating is what arrives at the diffusers. Keep unnecessary airline restriction down, and account for other devices if the same pump serves the pond as well.
Choose a variable circulation pump around the required delivered flow, not simply the highest number on the box. Drain and skimmer lines must supply that flow without excessive draw-down, and any additional shower or return circuit must have its own suitable capacity.

Leave room to look after both drums
Allow access to the mechanical screen, biological drum, drive assemblies and UV-C, as well as room to lift the lid. Set the filter to the correct pond operating level and confirm the actual connection layout before constructing a manifold. A low roof over the bay should not prevent the largest service component being removed.
During routine checks, look at the waste discharge, screen rinse pattern, water levels, aeration and the movement of the biological stage. Changes in sound or cleaning frequency are useful early warnings. Follow the servicing instructions rather than directing a pressure washer at the screen or stripping all established media at once.
