A long-format XXL combi for a planned filter bay

The Excellent 80/100 XXL Inline Gravity is the long-format option for a large koi-pond system. At 2,900 mm long but 850 mm wide, it offers a very different installation shape from the conventional XXL’s broad footprint.

The drum is 650 mm in diameter and 800 mm long. Together with automatic rinsing, biological chambers and two 80W high-output UV-C units, it provides the main stages of a high-capacity filter system. Maximum throughput is 100,000 litres/hour in the gravity-fed configuration.

Choose by the complete layout

Seven 110 mm inlets and three 110 mm outlets give scope for several drain, skimmer and clean-side branches. Their positioning, valve access and resistance need to work with the filter room. The maximum flow is not something to aim for without checking the actual draw-down and supply from the pond.

The conventional XXL Gravity is shorter but much wider, and its media and connection arrangement differs. The two are not interchangeable purely because both carry an 80/100 name. Compare the exact bodies and operating layouts before building the base or manifold.

Automatic solids removal and twin UV-C

The 120-micron screen retains suspended waste. A level change triggers the drum drive and internal wash pump, rinsing collected material into the waste channel. Keeping that waste out of the biological sections reduces the amount of sludge those sections have to deal with.

The two high-output UV-C lamps help control green water on the larger circuit. They remain separate from the biological treatment of ammonia and nitrite. Record the correct HO lamp and quartz references for maintenance, and leave a clear removal route for both assemblies.

A model-specific media plan

Choose the moving and fixed media for this Inline layout, not by copying a conventional XXL package. The moving section needs sufficient aeration and free space, while matting must remain in its designated fixed-media area. The final media loading and air-pump selection should be matched to the pond’s feeding demand and the actual chamber arrangement.

Our loose-matting choices use our high-quality Japanese matting sheets, each 1.2 × 1 m. One or two sheets are precisely that quantity of uncut material; two provide 2.4 m² before trimming. They are not advertised as a complete XXL cartridge replacement. For a full setup, plan the panel sizes, access and water passages before placing the media order.

Installation beyond the body dimensions

The full-length base must be supported evenly, with access along the filter for cleaning and component replacement. Account for delivery access as well as the finished operating position. A body that fits the filter room still has to get through the route leading to it.

The XXL Inline trickle add-on is a separate biological stage with a lower maximum flow than the drum. Design its branch accordingly. Use the Excellent manual for safe setup and servicing, and mature new media with controlled feeding and regular water tests.
