High Capacity Gravity Fed Drum Filtration System for Large Koi Pond Installations
The Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 30/50 Gravity Fed is a high performance combi drum filtration system designed for gravity fed koi ponds requiring strong mechanical separation and expanded biological capacity.
With overall dimensions of approximately 1510mm x 1117mm x 995mm, this model offers a wider body and increased internal chamber volume compared to the 30/40 and 30/45 L versions. As a result, it is better suited to larger residential koi systems and serious hobbyist installations.
In gravity fed configurations, this model supports flow rates of up to approximately 50000 litres per hour. Depending on stocking density and feeding regime, it is typically suited to koi ponds in the region of 45000 to 60000 litres.
High Efficiency Mechanical Filtration with Integrated UV
At the centre of the system sits a 400mm x 400mm stainless steel drum fitted with a precision 120 micron screen. This fine mesh removes suspended solids before they reach the biological chamber. Consequently, the bio stage remains cleaner and more stable over time.
When debris restricts flow, the stainless steel float switch activates the automatic cleaning cycle. The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor rotates the drum while high pressure spray nozzles clean the mesh. Meanwhile, the internal RVS 5 bar 600W flushing pump powers the wash cycle.
As a result, the system maintains consistent filtration performance with minimal manual input.
The integrated 80W high output UNOX stainless steel immersion UV C operates at 253.7nm. It helps control green water algae and harmful microorganisms while supporting clearer and healthier pond water.
Enlarged Biological Chamber and Media Configuration
The 30/50 Gravity Fed model features a biological chamber designed to hold up to approximately 200 litres of filter media.
For optimal biological performance, most installations use between 100 and 150 litres of Hel-X 13 moving bed media. This maintains sufficient void space for proper tumbling and self cleaning movement within the chamber.
In addition, many pond keepers include Japanese matting in the static section. This provides an alternative bacterial surface and helps polish the water before return to the pond.
The unit is supplied without Hel-X or Japanese matting. Therefore, media must be purchased separately to match your stocking levels.
Because this chamber runs a substantial volume of moving media, reliable aeration is essential. For this model, we recommend the Charles Austen ET150 air pump to maintain strong oxygenation and consistent media movement.
The 130Nm SPG XL drive motor features double seals to prevent leakage and protect against moisture ingress. Meanwhile, the control box manages drum cleaning cycles for dependable long term operation.
