Low-profile drum filtration with rotating Mountain Tree media

The Filtreau Excellent Mountain Tree 30/40 Low combines an automatic mechanical drum with a specialist rotating biological-media arrangement. It is a different approach from a conventional combi filled with loose moving media and a standard Japanese-matting cartridge.

The long, narrow body measures 2,370 × 640 × 750 mm. That makes it a useful comparison for a shallow filter installation where length is available but width is restricted. It is a gravity-fed model, with pond water reaching the mechanical stage before the circulation pump.

Two stages, with different jobs

The first drum separates suspended solids through a 120-micron screen. When screen loading changes the water level, the automatic cleaning system rotates the drum and runs the internal wash pump, directing dirt into the waste channel.

The biological arrangement uses Mountain Tree media, including Lotus Root Bacteria House I and II and green Spiral Filter Mat. Instead of loose media tumbling in a moving bed, it uses a rotating biological stage. The mechanical and biological stages each have their own drive.

The value is in combining early solids removal with a designed biological stage. It does not mean the filter instantly becomes mature: bacteria still need time, oxygen and suitable conditions, and feeding must reflect the stage of establishment.

Keep the specialist media arrangement intact

This is not a filter to fit out automatically with the same loose Hel-X and Japanese-matting add-ons used for ordinary Excellent combis. Mountain Tree media and the rotating assembly need to be maintained in their intended configuration.

The fitted air bars require a suitable external air supply. Choose that supply for the actual operating depth and biological arrangement rather than assuming the inclusion of diffusers means an air pump is in the box. Keep access to both the mechanical and biological stages for inspection and servicing.

UV-C and practical pond sizing

An 80W high-output UV-C unit helps control suspended green-water algae alongside the biological treatment of ammonia and nitrite. It uses the Excellent high-output lamp format, so keep the matching lamp and quartz references with the maintenance records.

Maximum flow is 40,000 litres/hour, with a maximum koi-pond rating of 40,000 litres. Treat that pond figure as an upper selection guide, allowing margin for heavy stocking and feeding rather than assuming all ponds of that volume have the same demand.

Choosing the layout and installing it

The 30/50 Low Mountain Tree offers a shorter, wider body, while the 50/65 XL Mountain Tree is taller and wider. Compare the complete footprints and service routes before deciding the filter-room layout.

Set the supported base at the correct gravity operating level. Leave room for lid opening, UV servicing and inspection of the rotating biological assembly. Keep the waste path clear, follow the Excellent safety and maintenance guidance and use the exact model instructions for its specialist biological components.
