Low-profile drum and biological filtration beside your pond
A pump-fed pond does not have to mean cleaning filter sponges every few days. The Filtreau Excellent 20/25 Low Pump Fed catches suspended waste on an automatically cleaned drum screen, then passes the water through its biological sections before it returns to the pond.
At 750mm high, it is a practical candidate for an upgrade where a full-height combi would be difficult to house. The pond pump delivers water to the filter, so you can retain a pump-fed approach rather than convert the whole installation to gravity feed. Plan the return route first: the cleaned water needs to flow back to the pond freely, not be forced through a restrictive return.
A cleaner biological stage, with less hands-on rinsing
The drum’s 120-micron screen intercepts solids before they enter the media sections. When the level sensor calls for a clean, the drive rotates the drum and the built-in wash pump supplies the spray bar. Debris leaves through the waste channel instead of remaining in a filter bay until the next manual clean.
That arrangement is particularly useful when replacing a conventional multi-bay filter: the drum deals with the solids, while the separate moving-bed and Japanese-matting sections concentrate on biological filtration. Aerated moving media gives bacteria access to oxygen and dissolved waste. The fixed mats provide additional surfaces without needing to tumble.
An integrated 80W high-output UV-C tackles suspended green-water algae. This is a green-water control stage, not a substitute for sufficient biological media or a guarantee against every water-quality problem.
Size it by the water actually reaching the filter
This pump-fed version has a maximum flow of 20,000 litres per hour and a koi pond rating up to 20,000 litres. The corresponding general-pond rating is 40,000 litres, but that is not the same as the capacity for a heavily fed koi pond. Stocking, feeding and the maturity of the media need to be part of the selection.
A pump labelled 20,000 litres per hour will not usually deliver that figure once lift and pipe resistance are included. Equally, fitting a much larger pump does not increase the drum’s capacity. Select a variable-flow pond pump with a suitable performance curve, and balance the inlet flow with the available gravity return. If the filter cannot return water quickly enough, reducing restriction is more important than increasing pump speed.
Build the media package around your pond
Hel-X and Japanese matting are supplied separately with this model. The listed media options are 100 litres of Hel-X 13 and 2m² of Japanese matting. Keep the two types in their intended sections and leave the moving bed enough room to circulate properly.
Choose Hel-X 13 for the moving section and our high-quality Japanese matting for the matting section. Our sheets measure 1.2m Ă— 1m; two provide 2.4m² before cutting. These are loose sheets for fitting to the chamber, not a pre-cut cartridge.
A matching cartridge-and-Hel-X package can be convenient when available. Buy that package or its separate equivalent, rather than inadvertently paying for both. The external air pump is also separate. The ET80 is a possible starting point; confirm its delivered airflow at your working depth and whether it will serve other diffusers.

Make access and servicing part of the installation
The housing is 902 mm wide, but the complete unit reaches 1117 mm across the projecting equipment. Allow additional space for pipework and maintenance rather than building the filter bay to the body dimensions alone.
Leave space above the lid as well as around the pipe connections. A low filter installed under a shelf that prevents screen or UV servicing is not an accessible installation. Provide an effective waste route and keep electrical connections protected in accordance with the manual.
Watch how the filter behaves during the first weeks. New media needs time to establish, and waste loading changes as fish are fed more heavily. Check ammonia and nitrite, inspect the spray pattern and keep the waste channel clear. Frequent cleaning or a rising inlet water level warrants a check for screen fouling, restricted returns or too much feed flow.
