Automatic drum cleaning and Mountain Tree biological treatment

The Filtreau Excellent Mountain Tree 50/70 Gravity gives you the specialist Mountain Tree treatment arrangement in a 1,005 mm-high body. Its 1,773 × 1,163 mm footprint is shorter and wider than the long Inline-style Mountain Tree models.

The model name is 50/70, while the maximum operating flow is 50,000 litres/hour. Use that actual flow limit when planning the pumps and pipework rather than assuming the second number in the name is the permitted throughput.

Two kinds of filtration in sequence

The mechanical drum catches suspended solids on a 120-micron screen. A change in water level starts the cleaning cycle, using the internal wash pump to rinse the rotating mesh. Collected material is discharged to waste.

The biological stage uses the Mountain Tree rotating-media arrangement with Lotus Root Bacteria House I and II and Spiral Filter Mat. Its purpose is to provide an environment for biological treatment after the solids have been separated, rather than to hold the pond’s coarse waste.

The drive for the biological stage has a different role from the mechanical drum drive. Keep both systems accessible for inspection instead of assuming all servicing is confined to the screen end of the filter.

Media and air without unnecessary extras

When renewing the biological media, use matching Mountain Tree components and keep the original layout. Extra loose media can obstruct the drum’s movement and water paths, so check with us before changing the media arrangement.

The fitted air bars need a separate air pump matched to the water depth and setup. The media still has to mature, so monitor ammonia and nitrite and increase feeding in line with biological performance. More expensive media does not remove the need for a careful startup.

UV-C, pond load and placement

The included 80W high-output UV-C helps control suspended algae. It uses an HO lamp, not an automatically interchangeable amalgam lamp of the same wattage. Keep the service route clear for quartz cleaning and lamp replacement.

The maximum koi-pond rating is 50,000 litres, with additional margin sensible for intensive stocking or feeding. Install the body at the specified gravity operating level on a fully supported base, and keep the drain and skimmer branches balanced as circulation is increased.

Comparing Mountain Tree layouts

The 30/50 Low Mountain Tree shares the broad footprint but has a lower body. The 50/65 XL Mountain Tree is longer and narrower, with a different drum and connection arrangement. Compare those physical differences and service requirements, not the names alone.
