Heavy Duty XL Gravity Fed Drum Filtration System for Large Koi Pond Installations
The Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 50/65 XL Gravity Fed Inline is a high capacity professional combi drum filtration system designed for large gravity fed koi pond installations with heavy biological demand including auto top up.
With overall dimensions of approximately 2254mm x 850mm x 1005mm, this XL model provides a significantly enlarged drum chamber and biological section compared to the 30 series units. As a result, it is suited to serious koi systems and larger private or commercial pond builds.
In gravity fed configurations, the 50/65 XL supports flow rates of up to approximately 65000 litres per hour. It is typically suited for koi ponds in the region of 60000 to 65000 litres and ornamental ponds up to approximately 120000 to 130000 litres depending on stocking levels.
The inline layout allows installation within filter bays or plant rooms while maintaining gravity fed bottom drain and skimmer operation.
Heavy Duty Mechanical Filtration with Integrated UV
At the centre of the system sits a large stainless steel drum fitted with a precision 120 micron screen. This ultra fine mesh removes suspended solids before they enter the biological chamber. Consequently, the bio stage remains cleaner and more stable under heavy feeding conditions.
When debris restricts flow, the stainless steel float switch activates the automatic cleaning cycle. The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor rotates the drum while high pressure spray nozzles clean the mesh. Meanwhile, the internal RVS 5 bar 600W flushing pump powers the wash cycle.
As a result, the filter maintains consistent performance even under high turnover conditions.
The integrated 80W high output stainless steel immersion UV C operates at 253.7nm. It helps control green water algae and harmful microorganisms while supporting clearer and healthier pond water.
XL Biological Capacity and Media Configuration
The 50/65 XL Gravity Fed Inline model features a large biological chamber designed to hold up to approximately 400 litres of filter media.
For optimal performance, most installations utilise between 200 and 250 litres of Hel-X 13 moving bed media. This allows sufficient void space for proper tumbling and self cleaning movement within the chamber.
Japanese matting can also be added in a static section to provide additional bacterial surface area and polishing.
The unit is supplied without Hel-X or Japanese matting. Therefore, media must be purchased separately to match stocking density.
To support this large media volume, the chamber includes 4 x 50mm x 300mm air bars. Strong aeration is essential to maintain oxygenation and prevent dead zones.
For this model, we recommend the Charles Austen ET150 or Charles Austen ET200 air pump depending on stocking levels.
The 130Nm SPG XL drive motor features double seals to prevent leaks and protect against moisture ingress. Meanwhile, the control box manages drum cleaning cycles for reliable long term operation.
