Bio Carrier Hel-X 13 (100L)
This 100-litre pack of genuine Hel-X 13 is a moving-bed biological filter medium with a high protected surface area for the bacteria that convert toxic ammonia and nitrite. The 13mm element is designed to remain in constant, aerated movement so fresh water and oxygen reach the biofilm evenly.
Hel-X 13 is used in professional pond and wastewater filtration because the protected internal structure helps retain active biofilm during movement. The useful capacity of a chamber is determined by water volume, media fill percentage, aeration and feeding load—not simply by filling every available litre with plastic.
Moving-bed benefits

Sizing and starting a moving bed
Do not overfill the chamber. Leave enough free water volume for the media to roll freely and install screens that retain every element without restricting flow. Aeration must move the whole bed, not only create a vigorous boil in one corner.
New media needs time to colonise. Test ammonia and nitrite, feed conservatively and preserve mature media where possible. Avoid disinfectants, untreated chlorinated water and aggressive cleaning that strips the developing biofilm.
Our practical view: A moving bed that only churns at the diffuser is not fully active. We would rather use a little less media with complete, gentle movement than pack in the advertised maximum and leave static clumps around the chamber walls.
Frequently asked questions
Is 100 litres suitable for every filter?
No. Check chamber volume, permitted fill percentage and the biological load.
Does it need an air pump?
Yes. A moving bed requires continuous aeration sized to move the media and supply oxygen.
How quickly does it mature?
It begins colonising immediately but useful capacity develops over weeks and varies with temperature and ammonia supply.
Can it replace mechanical filtration?
No. Remove solids before the moving bed so debris does not coat the media.
Should it be cleaned?
Healthy moving media is largely self-cleaning; rinse only when necessary and avoid chlorine.
