Heavy Duty High Flow Gravity Fed Drum Filtration System for Large Koi Pond Installations
The Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 50/70 Gravity Fed is a high capacity professional combi drum filtration system designed for large gravity fed koi pond installations requiring substantial water turnover and powerful mechanical separation including auto top up.
With overall dimensions of approximately 1825mm x 1117mm x 1005mm, this model provides a wider body and increased drum throughput compared to the 50/65 XL. As a result, it is suited to serious koi systems and larger estate or commercial installations.
In gravity fed configurations, the 50/70 supports flow rates of up to approximately 70000 litres per hour. It is typically suited for koi ponds in the region of 65000 to 75000 litres and ornamental ponds up to approximately 130000 to 150000 litres depending on stocking levels.
High Capacity Mechanical Filtration with Dual UV
At the centre of the system sits a large stainless steel drum fitted with a precision 120 micron screen. This fine mesh removes suspended solids before they enter the biological chamber. Consequently, the bio stage remains cleaner and more stable under heavy feeding conditions.
When debris restricts flow, the stainless steel float switch activates the automatic cleaning cycle. The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor rotates the drum while high pressure spray nozzles clean the mesh. Meanwhile, the internal RVS 5 bar 600W flushing pump powers the wash cycle.
As a result, the filter maintains consistent performance even under high load conditions.
Unlike smaller models, the 50/70 features two 80W high output stainless steel immersion UV units operating at 253.7nm. This increased UV capacity provides stronger algae and pathogen control for high flow systems.
Biological Capacity and Media Configuration
The 50/70 Gravity Fed model features a biological chamber designed to hold approximately 200 litres of filter media.
For optimal biological performance, many installations utilise Hel-X 13 moving bed media within this chamber. Proper void space must be maintained to allow correct tumbling and oxygenation.
The unit is supplied without Hel-X or Japanese matting. Therefore, media must be purchased separately to suit the stocking density of your pond.
To support biological performance, the chamber includes 2 x 50mm x 300mm air bars to provide consistent oxygenation and media movement.
For this model, we recommend the Charles Austen ET150 air pump to ensure stable aeration under heavy load.
The 130Nm SPG XL drive motor features double seals to prevent leakage and protect against moisture ingress. Meanwhile, the control box manages drum cleaning cycles for reliable long term operation.
