Low-height inline treatment with a larger mechanical stage

The Excellent 30/40 Low Inline Gravity makes a useful step up from the narrower 25/30 Inline when you want a larger mechanical stage without moving to a broad filter body. It keeps the 1,935 mm length and 750 mm height, widening to 640 mm to accommodate its 500 mm-diameter drum.

This model handles up to 45,000 litres/hour in a properly arranged gravity-fed circuit. Choose it for its actual flow, footprint and biological setup, rather than interpreting the 30/40 name as two interchangeable pond ratings.

Why the drum comes before the media

Bottom-drain and skimmer water passes through the 120-micron screen before entering the biological sections. When the screen begins to restrict the flow, automatic washing turns the drum and uses the internal pressure pump to rinse waste away.

Removing solids first helps keep the biological media from collecting sludge. It also makes routine ownership easier: you are checking an automatic mechanical stage rather than repeatedly cleaning a bed of media that has become the pond’s main dirt trap.

Selecting media for the available space

The optional layout lists 100 litres of Hel-X and 2 m² of Japanese matting. Choose a media loading that can be aerated evenly and keep the fixed matting in its own section. A moving bed needs water space as well as media; crowding it can leave dead areas that barely move.

Our high-quality Japanese matting is supplied in 1.2 × 1 m sheets. Two sheets provide 2.4 m² before trimming. They allow a measured cut-to-fit arrangement but should not be mistaken for the exact pre-shaped manufacturer cartridge. Check thickness, panel spacing and access before cutting.

The fitted air bars need a separate air pump. Choose it with the media and water depth in mind, and remember that new biological media must mature before supporting the planned feeding load. The included 80W high-output UV-C assists green-water control but does not process ammonia or nitrite.

Keeping the flow balanced

Three inlet lines and two outlets provide the main connections. Plan the drain and skimmer branches so their resistance does not leave one line starved while another dominates. Allow room for isolation valves and check the running water level as circulation is increased.

If more height is available, the 30/45 Inline L Gravity offers a different body and media arrangement. For a pump supplied from inside the pond, use the pump-fed 30/40 Low Inline instead.

Technical details

A complete installation, not just a footprint

Set the level base against the correct pond operating level and include space for waste drainage and UV servicing. The 30/40 Low Inline trickle has its own flow limit and adds height, so plan it before constructing a roof or enclosure.

Inspect the screen, nozzles and waste channel regularly, following the Excellent manual for safe isolation. Good access at installation pays off every time you need to clean a quartz sleeve or clear seasonal debris.
