Large-format automatic filtration for pump-fed ponds

The Excellent Combi 80/100 XXL Pump Fed is intended for a large pond system that supplies the filter from circulation pumps. Its long 650 mm-diameter drum, extensive biological sections and twin 80W high-output UV-C units bring the main treatment stages into one body.

Maximum flow is 70,000 litres/hour for this version. The gravity-fed XXL has a different limit, so pump selection should use the pump-fed specification rather than the numbers in the model name. The return system must be able to carry the whole delivered flow back to the pond without backing up.

Mechanical cleaning at a larger scale

The 120-micron drum screen holds suspended dirt out of the biological sections. A level change starts the rinse cycle, and the built-in pressure-cleaning pump feeds the spray bar while the drum rotates. Collected solids leave through the waste discharge instead of remaining in the media.

Automatic washing makes a large filter more manageable, but the screen, spray nozzles and waste route still need attention. Plan those checks from the outset, including a safe way to isolate the system and reach the components without leaning over inaccessible pipework.

A measured approach to the media

The optional biological arrangement lists 500 litres of Hel-X and 10 m² of Japanese matting. Such a setup requires an air pump selected for the working depth and distribution system. More media is only useful if water and air can reach it and the moving bed remains mobile.

The loose matting add-on uses our high-quality Japanese matting sheets, each 1.2 × 1 m. One or two sheets are an exact quantity of uncut material, not the whole XXL matting layout. Two sheets supply 2.4 m² before trimming; a complete 10 m² installation needs a separate cutting and quantity plan.

Keep fixed matting and moving media in their intended sections. Leave access for maintenance and build the feeding load as the new biological media matures. Water clarity from the UV-C is not evidence that an immature filter can process the full fish load.

The return is part of the filter design

This unit measures 2,760 × 1,515 × 1,005 mm, so its installed height and return route need careful planning. Avoid long undersized returns and shared pipes that become the limiting point. An adjustable feed pump helps establish the right operating flow after the system is filled and tested.

Where width is restricted, the XXL Inline Pump Fed offers a narrower format with different plumbing. For a bottom-drain system with pumps after the filter, choose the gravity-fed XXL instead.

Planning for long-term ownership

Allow space to service both UV lamps and quartz sleeves, remove media panels and inspect the drum. Support the full base and protect electrical equipment appropriately. The matched XXL shower can provide an additional stage, but its own permitted flow must be planned independently.

Use the Excellent manual during commissioning and servicing. Check water levels through several rinse cycles and increase circulation gradually, rather than starting at the largest pump setting and hoping the rest of the installation keeps up.
