The Excellent 60/80 XL is a large gravity-fed combi with seven 110 mm inlets, a 650 mm drum and flows up to 80,000 litres an hour. Automatic washing, biological chambers and 80W UV-C support a carefully planned high-capacity system.

More biological-filter space in a gravity-fed XL system
The gravity-fed Excellent Combi 60/80 XL offers more room for the biological setup and more inlet flexibility than the smaller Excellent combis. It suits a larger koi-pond project where several drains and skimmers need to feed a coordinated filtration system.
Its 2,100 mm-long body combines a 650 mm drum, biological chambers and an 80W high-output UV-C unit. Maximum water flow is 80,000 litres/hour, with seven 110 mm inlets and three 110 mm outlets. Those figures make pipe design and service access especially important.
Keeping the biological chambers cleaner
The drum separates solid debris through a 120-micron screen. When the screen loads, the level-operated cleaning system rotates it and uses the internal wash pump to remove the collected material. Rinse water carries that waste out of the system rather than into the media sections.
The biological media then processes dissolved fish waste. A larger media arrangement can support a greater feeding demand once mature, but it still needs oxygen and even water movement. The fitted air bars distribute air within the chambers; they need an appropriately sized external air pump to supply them.
Planning a full media layout
The optional arrangement for this model lists 200 litres of Hel-X and 4.5 m² of Japanese matting. That matting quantity is larger than a simple one- or two-sheet addition. Our high-quality Japanese matting sheets are 1.2 Ă— 1 m each, so two provide only 2.4 m² before trimming.
The loose-sheet choices are therefore best understood as clearly measured additions, not a complete XL cartridge substitute. Check the internal layout, leave water passages and keep static matting separate from tumbling media. If you need the full matting arrangement, plan the cutting and quantity with us before ordering rather than expecting two sheets to fill it.
Allow the biological media to mature before asking it to support the final feeding load. Test ammonia and nitrite and adjust feeding accordingly. The 80W UV-C addresses suspended algae; it is not a substitute for that biological capacity.
Matching a high-flow filter to the pond
At this scale, consider the whole network: bottom drains, skimmers, branch valves, clean-side pumps and return jets. Dividing the load across several branches is useful only if their resistance and operating levels are planned properly. Leave headroom below the 80,000 litres/hour maximum for the normal loading of the screen.
The 80/100 XXL Gravity offers a larger body and drum where the project demands more again. The 60/80 XL Pump Fed is the alternative for pumped inlet water and has its own lower flow limit.

Maintenance without dismantling the installation
Provide a clear aisle beside the 1,117 mm-wide body, sufficient height to open the lid and access to the UV assembly. The base must support the filter evenly when full. Plan a waste route that can be checked and cleared, rather than burying every connection behind finished walls.
If adding the 60/80 trickle stage, account for its separate flow limit and the extra installed height. Follow the Excellent manual for servicing and inspect the screen, waste channel and spray pattern throughout the season.
