The Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 60/80 XL Gravity Fed is the largest gravity fed model within the Excellent range, engineered for very large koi ponds, ornamental lakes and commercial aquatic systems including auto top up.
With overall dimensions of approximately 2100mm x 1117mm x 1005mm, this XL chassis provides a significantly enlarged drum chamber and biological volume. As a result, it handles high fish loads and demanding turnover rates with stability and consistency.
In gravity fed configurations, the 60/80 XL supports flow rates of up to approximately 80000 litres per hour. It is typically suited for koi ponds in the region of 80000 to 100000 litres depending on stocking levels, and ornamental ponds up to approximately 160000 to 180000 litres.
High Capacity Mechanical Filtration with Integrated UV
At the heart of the system sits a large stainless steel drum fitted with a precision 120 micron screen. This fine mesh removes suspended solids before they reach the biological chamber. Consequently, the bio stage remains cleaner and more efficient under heavy feeding conditions.
When debris restricts flow, the stainless steel float switch activates the automatic cleaning cycle. The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor rotates the drum while high pressure spray nozzles clean the mesh. Meanwhile, the internal RVS 5 bar 600W flushing pump powers the wash cycle.
As a result, the filter maintains consistent mechanical separation even at very high flow rates.
The 60/80 XL includes an 80W high output stainless steel immersion UV unit operating at 253.7nm. This helps control green water algae and harmful microorganisms while supporting stable water clarity.
Enlarged Biological Chamber and Media Configuration
The 60/80 XL model features a substantially enlarged biological chamber designed to hold approximately 200 to 250 litres of filter media.
For optimal biological performance, we recommend using 200 to 250 litres of Hel-X 13 moving bed media. However, you must maintain sufficient void space to allow proper tumbling and oxygenation.
Many advanced systems also incorporate Japanese matting within the static section. This provides additional surface area and helps polish the water before final discharge.
The unit is supplied without Hel-X or Japanese matting. Therefore, media must be purchased separately to suit stocking density and feeding regime.
Aeration Requirements
To support the large biological volume, the 60/80 XL comes pre fitted with 4 x 50mm x 300mm air bars. These bars ensure full oxygenation and consistent media movement across the entire chamber.
For this model, we recommend the Charles Austen ET200 air pump. This provides sufficient airflow to maintain vigorous tumbling under heavy load conditions.
Proper aeration prevents dead zones, supports nitrifying bacteria and ensures long term biological stability.
