Combined filtration for a larger pump-fed pond

The Excellent Combi 50/70 Pump Fed is a large combi filter for installations where circulation pumps deliver dirty water into the filter. Its 650 mm-diameter drum provides the mechanical stage, followed by space for biological media and an included 80W high-output UV-C unit.

The pump-fed configuration handles up to 50,000 litres/hour. A system of this size needs more than a powerful pump: the filter position, gravity return and waste drainage must all be planned to cope with the real volume of water moving through it.

A substantial drum with its own cleaning pump

Suspended solids collect on the 120-micron screen. The resulting water-level change starts the cleaning cycle, turning the drum while the internal wash pump sprays the mesh. Waste is discharged separately, keeping the biological section from receiving the bulk of the collected dirt.

The pond circulation pump and drum wash pump have separate jobs. The included cleaning pump runs the rinse system; it does not supply water from the pond or power the pond return. Allow for the circulation pump, air pump, media and pipework when planning the complete installation.

Getting useful biological capacity

An optional arrangement of 200 litres of Hel-X and 3 m² of Japanese matting is associated with this model. Moving media needs room to tumble, and matting should be arranged in its own section so water can pass through and it can be removed for maintenance.

We use our high-quality Japanese matting for loose-sheet add-ons. Select one or two 1.2 × 1 m sheets as required. Two sheets total 2.4 m² before trimming, so they are not the full 3 m² matting arrangement or a ready-made cartridge. A suitable external air pump must also be included in the system plan.

The biological capacity develops as bacteria colonise the media. Introduce feeding progressively and use water tests to guide changes. The UV-C helps with green water, but it cannot compensate for an immature moving bed or a food load beyond the media’s ability to process it.

Design the return before choosing the pump

The clean-water return must fall back to the pond without a restriction that raises the level inside the filter. Consider every bend, reducer and shared return branch. An adjustable pump allows commissioning below maximum output and gives you control as the pond and filter settle into operation.

The gravity-fed 50/70 is intended for a different arrangement, with the filter before the circulation pump. For a narrower above-pond installation, compare the 50/65 Inline XL Pump Fed.

Space for servicing

A 1,825 × 1,117 × 1,005 mm body needs a properly supported base and safe access around it. Keep the lid, drum screen and UV service route clear. The 50/70 trickle add-on can be considered for further biological treatment, provided its separate flow and support requirements are included.

Use the Excellent operating manual for commissioning and maintenance. Inspect the rinse nozzles and waste channel regularly; automated cleaning should make ownership easier, not hide a blocked drain until it causes a problem.
