Heavy Duty High Flow Pump Fed Drum Filtration System for Large Koi Pond Installations

The Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 50/70 Pump Fed is a high capacity professional combi drum filtration system built specifically for pump fed koi pond installations that require strong mechanical separation and high water turnover.

With overall dimensions of approximately 1825mm x 1117mm x 1005mm, this model offers a significantly larger drum chamber and expanded internal volume compared to the 50/65 XL. Because of this increased capacity, it suits serious koi systems, estate ponds and larger commercial installations where reliability is critical.

In pump fed configurations, the 50/70 handles flow rates of up to approximately 70000 litres per hour. Therefore, it works best on koi ponds in the region of 65000 to 75000 litres, depending on stocking levels and feeding intensity.

High Capacity Mechanical Filtration with Dual UV

At the centre of the system sits a large stainless steel drum fitted with a precision 120 micron screen. This fine mesh removes suspended solids before they reach the biological chamber. As a result, the bio stage remains cleaner, more stable and more efficient under heavy feeding conditions.

When debris begins to restrict flow, the stainless steel float switch detects the change immediately and activates the automatic cleaning cycle. The industrial 130Nm SPG XL motor then rotates the drum while high pressure spray nozzles clean the mesh. At the same time, the internal RVS 5 bar 600W flushing pump powers the wash cycle.

Consequently, the filter maintains consistent performance even during peak loading periods.

In addition, the 50/70 Pump Fed model incorporates dual 80W high output stainless steel immersion UV units operating at 253.7nm. Because of this increased UV capacity, it delivers stronger algae suppression and improved pathogen control across high flow systems.

Biological Capacity and Media Configuration

The 50/70 Pump Fed model includes a biological chamber designed to hold approximately 200 litres of filter media.

For optimal biological performance, we recommend using Hel-X 13 moving bed media within this chamber. However, you must maintain proper void space to allow correct tumbling and continuous oxygenation.

The unit does not include Hel-X or Japanese matting. Therefore, you should select media separately to match your stocking density and feeding regime.

To support biological efficiency, the chamber includes 2 x 50mm x 300mm air bars. These bars provide consistent oxygenation while keeping the media in constant motion. As a result, the system prevents dead zones and supports stable nitrification.

For this model, we recommend the Charles Austen ET150 air pump to ensure stable aeration under heavy load.

The 130Nm SPG XL drive motor features double seals to prevent leakage and protect against moisture ingress. Meanwhile, the control box manages drum cleaning cycles for reliable long term operation.
