Common Reed (Phragmites australis), often referred to as Norfolk Reed, is one of the most iconic and widely recognised wetland plants in the UK. With its towering height, feathery flower plumes, and dense growth habit, it is perfectly suited to large ponds, lakes, and natural wetland environments where structure, habitat, and ecological value are key.

This impressive reed can reach heights of 2 to 4 metres, forming dense stands of upright stems with long, arching green leaves. From late summer into autumn, it produces striking purple brown feathery flower panicles that gradually fade to a soft tan colour, adding seasonal interest well into winter. These tall, swaying plumes create a natural, flowing look that works beautifully in large scale planting schemes.

Common Reed plays a vital role in supporting wildlife. Its dense growth provides excellent shelter and nesting areas for birds, including rare wetland species, while also offering protection for amphibians and aquatic insects. It is commonly used in conservation and restoration projects due to its ability to enhance biodiversity and create valuable habitat.

In addition to its wildlife benefits, Phragmites australis is highly effective at stabilising banks and improving water quality. However, due to its extremely vigorous growth and spreading rhizomes, Common Reed is only suitable for large ponds, lakes, and open wetland areas. It is not recommended for small garden ponds, as it can quickly dominate and outcompete other plants, as well as potentially damage liners.

Fully hardy and highly adaptable, this native reed thrives in full sun or partial shade and performs best in consistently wet or shallow water conditions. When used in the right environment, it delivers both dramatic visual impact and significant ecological benefits.

Care Instructions

• Plant in shallow water or consistently wet soil at a depth of 0 cm to 50 cm, measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.
• Position in full sun or partial shade for best results. Due to its vigorous spreading habit, allow plenty of space and avoid planting in confined areas. Thin out or control rhizomes in managed environments if required. Cut back stems in late autumn or winter to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth in spring.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Common Reed will be carefully packed to protect the foliage and roots during transit.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

Plants supplied in 9cm pots require potting into suitable aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond.

Finofil baskets are manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. Their fine dual-mesh construction helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots. Basket shape may vary slightly depending on the plant and supplier availability.
