Club Rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris, syn. Scirpus lacustris), formerly known as Scirpus lacustris, is a strong, upright native aquatic plant that is ideal for large ponds, lakes, and natural wetland environments. Widely used in ecological planting schemes, this species is valued for both its visual structure and its important role in supporting wildlife and improving water quality.

This tall, reed like plant produces dense clumps of smooth, cylindrical green stems that can reach heights of up to 2 metres. From early summer through to late summer, typically June to September, it develops subtle brown flower clusters near the tips of the stems. While not showy, these flowers add seasonal interest and contribute to the plant’s naturalistic appearance.

Club Rush is particularly effective for creating vertical structure in larger water features. It works well when planted in groups, where it can form dense stands that provide shelter and nesting opportunities for wildfowl and other aquatic wildlife. The stems also act as a refuge for emerging insects such as dragonflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife ponds and conservation projects.

One of the key benefits of this plant is its ability to stabilise banks and help improve water quality. Its extensive root system binds soil together, reducing erosion along pond edges and lake margins. Care Instructions

• Plant in shallow water or wet soil at a depth of 1 cm to 40 cm, measured from the top of the basket to the water surface.
• Position in full sun or partial shade. Allow plenty of space for growth, as this plant spreads and forms dense clumps. Cut back dead stems in late autumn or early spring. Thin out clumps every few years if needed to maintain airflow and habitat quality.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Club Rush will be carefully packed to protect the foliage and roots during transit.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.

• 3 Litre Hexagonal Basket – 18 × 18 × 16cm

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

Plants supplied in 9cm pots require potting into suitable aquatic baskets before being placed in the pond.

Finofil baskets are manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. Their fine dual-mesh construction helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots. Basket shape may vary slightly depending on the plant and supplier availability.
