Water Mint | Mentha Aquatica
Fragrant Native Pond Plant with Lilac Flowers and Exceptional Wildlife Benefits
A Vigorous UK Native Pond Margin Plant Perfect for Wildlife Ponds and Natural Wetland Areas
Water Mint (Mentha aquatica) is one of the UK’s most recognisable native pond plants, valued for its attractive lilac flower clusters, fresh mint fragrance, and outstanding wildlife benefits. Found naturally along riverbanks, streams, ponds, and wetlands throughout Britain, this vigorous perennial is ideal for creating a thriving wildlife habitat around larger ponds and natural water features.
From midsummer through autumn, Water Mint produces dense clusters of soft lilac to purple flowers that rise above aromatic green foliage. These nectar-rich blooms attract huge numbers of bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it one of the best plants for encouraging biodiversity around the pond.
The foliage itself is equally attractive. Oval green leaves release a distinctive mint fragrance when brushed or crushed, adding an extra sensory element to your pond planting scheme. Throughout the growing season, Water Mint forms dense clumps that provide excellent shelter for amphibians, insects, and other pond wildlife.
As a UK native species, Water Mint plays an important ecological role in supporting healthy pond ecosystems. Frogs, toads, newts, dragonflies, and many aquatic insects benefit from the shelter and habitat it provides. The flowers also serve as a valuable food source when many other pond plants have finished blooming.
Due to its vigorous rhizomatous growth habit, Water Mint is best suited to larger ponds, wildlife ponds, natural wetlands, and rewilding projects where it has room to spread naturally. In smaller ornamental ponds, it is best grown within aquatic baskets to help manage its growth. If you are looking for a slower growing alternative, Water Spearmint or Pennyroyal may be more suitable.
Water Mint thrives in shallow water, damp soils, pond margins, and bog gardens. It performs equally well in full sun or partial shade and is extremely hardy throughout the UK, returning reliably year after year. For pond owners wanting a native plant that combines beauty, fragrance, wildlife value, and easy maintenance, Water Mint is an excellent choice.

Care Instructions
Water Mint is a vigorous plant that prefers consistently moist soil or shallow water. Plant on marginal shelves, bog gardens, wetland areas, or pond edges at a depth of up to 20cm.
For smaller ponds, keeping the plant within an aquatic basket is recommended to help control its spread. In larger wildlife ponds and wetlands, it can be allowed to naturalise naturally.
Trim back excessive growth during the growing season if required. In late autumn, cut stems back to ground level to encourage fresh healthy growth the following spring.
Water Mint is generally free from pests and diseases and requires very little ongoing maintenance once established.
