Arrowhead

Native marginal pond plant with striking foliage and elegant white flowers

Arrowhead (Sagittaria sagittifolia) is a beautiful native aquatic perennial, instantly recognisable by its distinctive arrow shaped leaves and elegant white flowers. This versatile marginal plant is ideal for adding height, structure, and natural character to pond edges, while also supporting a thriving wildlife environment.

From early summer through to autumn, Arrowhead produces delicate white flowers with deep purple centres, held above the foliage on slender stems. These blooms bring a clean, natural look to your pond and are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and hoverflies. The contrast between the crisp white petals and dark centres creates a striking display that stands out beautifully against the surrounding greenery.

The foliage is equally impressive, with upright, narrow leaves shaped like arrowheads that give the plant its common name. These leaves emerge from tuberous roots and can grow both above and below the water, allowing the plant to adapt easily to different planting depths. This adaptability makes Arrowhead a great choice for filling shallow margins and creating a more natural transition between water and land.

As a UK native plant, Arrowhead is perfectly suited to local conditions and plays an important role in supporting biodiversity. It provides shelter for aquatic insects and amphibians, while also helping to stabilise pond edges and improve overall water quality.

This plant spreads steadily through underground tubers and small bulbils, allowing it to establish well over time. While not overly invasive, it does benefit from occasional maintenance to keep it looking its best.

Supplied pre planted in an aquatic basket, Arrowhead is ready to be placed straight into your pond, making it a simple and effective addition to any pond planting scheme.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.

Available basket sizes:

  • 1 Litre Basket – usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square; some varieties may be supplied in a 14cm diameter × 10cm round basket
  • Pack of 3 × 1 Litre Baskets – each usually 11 × 11 × 11cm square

Planting depth is measured from the top of the aquatic basket to the water surface.

Finofil baskets are manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable. Their fine dual-mesh construction helps retain aquatic soil while allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots. Basket shape may vary slightly depending on the plant and supplier availability.
