The Burtons TF 700 Pond Drum Through Flow Filter is a powerful automatic mechanical filtration system designed for large koi ponds, heavily stocked fish ponds and high flow filtration systems. Manufactured in the UK by Burtons Aquatics, the TF 700 uses a precision 60 micron stainless steel drum screen to remove fine debris before it can break down and pollute pond water.

The TF-700 forms part of the Burtons Through Flow drum filter range. Unlike the standard BD drum filters, the TF design includes a greater number of inlet and outlet connections. This allows significantly higher water movement through the drum filter while maintaining efficient mechanical filtration.

As debris accumulates on the drum screen, the water level inside the drum chamber slowly rises. A float switch detects this change and automatically activates the cleaning cycle. During the cleaning process the drum rotates while a high pressure wash pump sprays the stainless steel screen clean. The system then flushes trapped debris into a waste tray and out to drain.

Because the cleaning cycle operates automatically, the drum filter continues running without interruption. This ensures efficient filtration, stable water quality and consistently clear pond water while greatly reducing maintenance.

How the Burtons TF700 Drum Filter Works

Pond water enters the drum filter through six 110 mm inlets positioned across the front and rear of the unit. Water then passes through the rotating stainless steel drum screen. The 60 micron mesh traps fine debris such as fish waste, uneaten food, blanketweed fragments and suspended solids.

As debris builds up on the drum screen, the water level inside the drum chamber gradually increases. The internal float switch monitors this level and activates the cleaning cycle when necessary. During the cycle the drum rotates while ten spray jets clean the screen using pressurised water. Waste is then flushed through the waste outlet and discharged to drain.

The TF range also includes additional cleaning jets within the waste chute. These help prevent debris from collecting inside the chute and ensure waste is discharged efficiently. The TF range also has internal UV clarifiers which keep the water clear and the screen clear of bio film.

Because the drum cleans itself automatically, mechanical filtration remains efficient at all times. This also protects downstream biological filters from solid waste and helps maintain excellent water clarity.

The TF-700 can operate in both gravity fed and pump fed pond filtration systems, making it suitable for a wide range of large pond installations.

Through flow drum filters are designed for ponds that require higher water turnover and increased circulation. By increasing the number of inlet and outlet connections, the TF range allows more water to pass through the drum filter while maintaining efficient mechanical filtration.

This improved circulation helps distribute oxygen more evenly across the pond and improves the removal of suspended debris. It also allows multiple bottom drains and skimmers to feed into a single drum filter system.

Gravity Fed vs Pump Fed Installation

The Burtons TF700 can be installed in both gravity fed and pump fed pond filtration systems.

In a gravity fed system, water flows directly from the pond into the drum filter through bottom drains and skimmers. The drum filter removes debris before the water reaches the pump. This improves filtration efficiency and protects pumps and biological filters. In gravity fed installations the TF 700 can handle flow rates up to 75,000 litres per hour.

Alternatively, the TF 700 can operate in pump fed systems where water is pumped directly into the drum filter. This approach is commonly used on ponds that were not originally built with bottom drains. In pump fed installations the TF 700 can handle flow rates up to 55,000 litres per hour.
