Burtons TF 1000 Pond Drum Through Flow Filter
High Capacity Self Cleaning Drum Filter for Very Large Koi Ponds
The Burtons TF 1000 Pond Drum Through Flow Filter is the largest and most powerful mechanical filtration system in the Burtons Aquatics range. It is designed for very large koi ponds, commercial ponds and heavily stocked fish systems that require extremely high water turnover and reliable debris removal.
Manufactured in the UK by Burtons Aquatics, the TF 1000 uses a precision 60 micron stainless steel drum screen to remove fine particles before they can break down and affect pond water quality. With flow rates of up to 110,000 litres per hour in gravity fed systems, this drum filter provides exceptional mechanical filtration for large scale pond installations.
Unlike traditional pond filters that require frequent manual cleaning, the TF 1000 uses a fully automated self cleaning system. As debris collects on the drum screen, the water level inside the drum chamber rises. A float switch detects this change and automatically activates the cleaning cycle.
During the cleaning cycle the drum rotates while fourteen high pressure spray jets wash the screen clean. The trapped debris is flushed into a waste chute and discharged to drain. Because this process happens automatically, the filter continues operating without interruption. As a result the pond maintains consistent water clarity while maintenance requirements remain extremely low.
The through flow design of the TF range allows significantly greater circulation compared with the standard BD drum filters. With six 110 mm inlets and four 110 mm outlets, the TF 1000 supports multiple bottom drains, skimmers and large biological filtration systems.
This makes it an ideal filtration solution for large koi ponds, commercial aquatic systems and installations where high circulation and mechanical filtration efficiency are critical.
How the Burtons TF1000 Drum Filter Works
Pond water enters the drum through six large 110 mm inlets positioned at the front and rear of the unit. The water then passes through the rotating stainless steel drum screen where the 60 micron mesh captures fine debris such as fish waste, uneaten food, blanketweed fragments and suspended solids.
As debris builds on the drum screen, water flow becomes slightly restricted and the water level inside the drum chamber rises. The internal float switch detects this change and automatically triggers the cleaning cycle.
When activated, the drum rotates slowly while fourteen high pressure spray jets clean the stainless steel screen. The waste is flushed into the waste chute and discharged out of the filter to drain. The TF range also has internal UV clarifiers which keep the water clear and the screen clear of bio film.
Because this cleaning process happens automatically, the drum screen remains clear and mechanical filtration continues operating efficiently. This also prevents solid waste from reaching the biological filtration stage, helping to protect filter media and maintain stable water quality.
Through Flow Drum Filter Design
The TF series differs from the standard BD range by increasing the number of inlets and outlets. This improves circulation and prevents flow restrictions in large filtration systems.
The Burtons TF-1000 includes six 110 mm inlets and four 110 mm outlets. This configuration allows water from multiple bottom drains and skimmers to feed the drum filter simultaneously.
For large koi ponds or commercial systems with high circulation demands, this design greatly improves filtration performance and overall water movement through the system.
Gravity Fed vs Pump Fed Installation
The Burtons TF1000 can be installed in both gravity fed and pump fed filtration systems.
In a gravity fed installation, water flows directly from the pond through bottom drains and skimmers into the drum filter. The filter removes debris before the water reaches the pump. This improves filtration efficiency and helps protect pumps and biological filters. In gravity fed systems the TF 1000 can handle flow rates up to 110,000 litres per hour.
In pump fed installations, water is pumped from the pond into the drum filter. This setup is commonly used when upgrading existing ponds that do not have bottom drains. In pump fed systems the TF-1000 can handle flow rates up to 75,000 litres per hour.
