The Burtons FB 600 Bio Chamber is a compact and highly effective moving bed biological filter. It is designed to increase the biological filtration capacity of pond filtration systems. Burtons Aquatics designs and manufactures this robust bio chamber in the UK, ensuring high quality and reliability.

Biological filtration plays a vital role in maintaining stable pond water conditions. As fish produce waste and organic debris breaks down, harmful compounds such as ammonia and nitrite enter the water. However, beneficial bacteria colonise biological filter media and convert these compounds into less harmful substances. As a result, the pond remains safe and healthy for fish.

The FB 600 Bio Chamber provides space for up to 100 litres of moving bed filter media. When combined with aeration, the media tumbles freely inside the chamber. This movement creates a highly oxygenated environment where beneficial bacteria can efficiently process waste.

The chamber has a maximum flow rate of 10,000 litres per hour. However, the recommended operating flow rate is between 6,000 and 8,000 litres per hour. Therefore, the FB 600 Bio Chamber works well in smaller pond filtration systems. In addition, it can also be installed as an extra biological stage within larger filtration systems.

Designed for Moving Bed Biological Filtration

The Burtons FB600 Bio Chamber is designed specifically for moving bed biological filtration systems.

Inside the chamber, an air stone agitates the biological filter media using a steady supply of air. As a result, the media remains suspended and moves freely within the chamber. At the same time, the movement constantly exposes the bacterial biofilm to oxygen rich water.

As the media circulates and tumbles, beneficial bacteria remain highly active. Consequently, the bacteria can process dissolved waste more efficiently. In addition, the constant movement helps maintain a thin and active biofilm layer. This prevents the media from clogging and keeps the filtration system working efficiently.

Therefore, the moving bed process supports strong biological filtration and helps maintain clear and healthy pond water.

Optimised Media Performance

The FB 600 Bio Chamber can hold up to 100 litres of fluidised biological filter media.

For optimal filtration performance, Burtons recommends using a mixture of their Bio Flo+ Media and Bio Tube Media. Because the two media types have different shapes and structures, they interact as they circulate within the chamber.

As the media moves, the pieces gently collide and bounce against each other. This increases the tumbling or boiling motion inside the filter chamber, improving oxygen distribution and circulation.

The increased movement supports more active bacterial colonies and helps maintain a healthy biofilm, allowing the filter to process waste efficiently.

Compact Design for Flexible Installation

The FB600 Bio Chamber is ideal for pond keepers who want to increase biological filtration capacity without installing a large filtration system.

Because of its compact footprint, the chamber is suitable for installations where space is limited. However, it still provides sufficient media capacity to support efficient biological filtration.

The chamber includes fixing points for air stones. In addition, it is supplied with an 8 inch disc air stone and airline. These components help ensure proper aeration of the filter media and reliable moving bed performance.

Recommended Air Pump

To operate a moving bed biological filter effectively, the filter media must remain constantly suspended and tumbling within the chamber. This requires a reliable air pump capable of producing sufficient airflow to create a strong boiling motion inside the filter.

For the Burtons FB 600 Bio Chamber we recommend using either the Charles Austen ET40 Air Pump or the Charles Austen ET60 Air Pump. Both pumps provide strong and reliable airflow which helps keep the biological media fully fluidised while ensuring the bacteria receive plenty of oxygen.

Using the correct air pump ensures the filter media circulates freely inside the chamber. As a result, beneficial bacteria remain highly active and the biological filtration stage can efficiently break down ammonia and nitrite within the pond.
