The TopClear 18000 kit pairs a pressurised pond filter and 18W UVC with a PondECO 4900 pump. It brings the main pumping and filtration equipment together for an ornamental pond, with foam and Bio-balls providing mechanical and biological filtration.

The 18W TopClear package with PondECO 4900

This is the largest TopClear kit in the listed range, combining an 18W ultraviolet clarifier and pressure filter with the PondECO 4900 pump. The supplied pump has a maximum flow of 5,300 litres per hour at a rated 29W. It belongs to the PondECO family, whereas the TopClear 10000 kit uses a Pond-Flow ECO 3000. Those are different pump designs with different performance and maintenance details.

The kit is also distinct from the TopClear 15000 filter-only listing. Although the published housing dimensions match, the 15000 has an 11W UVC and no supplied pump. Here the specified combination is the TopClear 18000, its 18W UVC and the named PondECO 4900.

Filtration capacity and pond suitability

SuperFish publishes a maximum pond-content rating of 18,000 litres. Use this as an upper equipment-selection figure and consider the fish load, feeding and incoming debris before choosing the system. It is not a guarantee that every 18,000-litre koi pond will be adequately served by this package. A pond with substantial stocking or heavy feeding needs its filtration assessed against those demands.

Within the housing, foam catches suspended waste and Bio-balls provide surfaces for biological filtration. The ultraviolet chamber acts on green-water algae as water passes through. These stages perform different functions: UVC operation does not replace cleaning the mechanical media or checking the pond’s water quality. Clear-looking water alone cannot show whether the biological system is keeping pace with the fish.

Planning the space and return height

The filter measures 35 × 44 × 58cm. Allow additional clearance above it for removing the lid, media and UV components. Its connections are on the lid, permitting partial concealment of the body, but the working parts must remain accessible. The TopClear manual specifies a position beside the pond, at least 50cm away, and warns against restricting the outlet.

The PondECO 4900 measures 19.7 × 8.8 × 13.6cm and has a 10m cable. Its published maximum head is 3.2m. The filter’s separate maximum water-head limit is 2m, so the pump’s higher figure must not be used as an allowable lift for the complete kit. Hose length, bends and equipment resistance also reduce the flow delivered in operation.

Connecting and positioning the pump

Both the filter and pump have 25, 32 and 40mm hose connection steps. The TopClear installation instructions describe 32mm hose on the 10000, 15000 and 18000 so that the flow indicator remains visible. Remove the filter’s stepped connectors before cutting to the chosen size, secure the hoses with appropriate clamps and leave the return open. Plan a separate route for the cleaning discharge.

The PondECO manual describes submerged and inline arrangements. In the pond, place it level on a firm base, at least 20cm below the surface and no deeper than 2m. For an inline installation, follow the pump manual’s connection arrangement and maintain the water supply. Never run the pump without water; switch off the UVC if circulation stops.

Using the flow indicator and backwash system

Check filter flow weekly and backwash when needed. The first clean-up of a dirty pond may require much more frequent attention, with daily flushing mentioned in the manufacturer’s instructions. Watch the actual delivery and collected waste instead of assuming a new filter will immediately settle into a light maintenance routine.

Auto Clean Wash reverses water through the sponge and carries the waste out through the CLEAN outlet. Direct the waste hose away from the pond, follow the prescribed sequence and refit the end cap and seal afterwards. The manufacturer lists optional valve 06020719 for this model and the other larger TopClear filters. That valve is an additional accessory, rather than an included feature of this listing.

Keeping the foam and biological media in service

Backwashing does not replace a full periodic service. Disconnect the pump and filter before opening the housing, then release the lid clamps as instructed and check the seal during reassembly. SuperFish recommends annual foam replacement, or sooner where needed. The replacement listed for this filter is the TopClear 10/15/18 sponge.

Rinse the Bio-balls in pond water to help retain established bacteria. The foam and dividing plate have separate cleaning instructions and may be rinsed with tap water according to the manual. Keeping those methods distinct helps avoid unnecessarily disturbing the biological media during a mechanical clean. Restart carefully and check the lid and hose connections for leaks.

Servicing the 18W UVC and PondECO pump

The UVC schedule includes monthly operation checks, annual lamp replacement and quartz inspection and cleaning. Allow the disconnected lamp to cool before opening the assembly. Check the actual red-lock or green-lock generation before ordering internal spares; the manufacturer’s TopClear page links the relevant manuals. Visible light does not establish the remaining useful ultraviolet output.

The PondECO has dry-running and thermal protection, but these do not remove its need for water or maintenance. Its manual recommends cleaning at least twice yearly, including removal of scale and inspection of the rotor. For shutdown during frost, clean and store the pump frost-free and follow the filter’s winter removal instructions. Keep both pieces of equipment accessible throughout the year so a stopped pump or overdue filter service can be dealt with promptly.
