The SuperFish TopClear 15000 combines a pressure filter with a built-in 11W UVC. It is the filter-only option for a system with a separately selected pond pump, using foam to collect debris and Bio-balls as a surface for filter bacteria.

The taller TopClear filter-only option

The SuperFish TopClear 15000 combines an 11W UVC with mechanical and biological filtration in a 35 × 44 × 58cm housing. Its published maximum pond-volume rating is 15,000 litres, and its maximum pump-capacity specification is 5,000 litres per hour. This listing supplies the filter with integrated UVC; the pond pump is chosen separately.

The 15000 is 12cm taller than the TopClear 10000, while the listed length and width are the same. That height difference matters when planning a screened or partially buried installation. Allow working clearance above the lid so you can open the housing, remove the foam and reach the UV assembly without lifting out permanent landscaping.

Matching the filter to your pond

Use the 15,000-litre figure as the manufacturer’s upper pond-content rating and assess the actual pond before buying. Feeding, fish stocking and incoming debris influence filtration demand. A koi pond with a substantial fish load needs a different assessment from a lightly stocked ornamental pond of the same water volume. The model number alone does not determine the right pump or how many fish the system can support.

A separately purchased pump must suit the whole installation and remain within the stated 5,000-litre-per-hour maximum pump-capacity limit. Hose length, bends and the height of the return affect the working flow. For a combined filter-and-pump purchase, compare the TopClear 18000 kit; it is a different package with an 18W UVC, rather than this 15000 filter with a pump simply added to the box.

How the filtration stages work together

The foam collects suspended debris as water moves through the filter. Bio-balls provide a surface for the bacteria responsible for biological filtration, and the built-in ultraviolet clarifier addresses green-water algae as water passes through its chamber. Keeping mechanical waste under control and maintaining the biological media are therefore separate parts of looking after the system.

The UVC has a viewing indicator so operation can be checked without opening the assembly. A working lamp does not remove the need to clean the foam or monitor water quality. Equally, clear-looking water does not tell you whether biological filtration is meeting the pond’s needs. Keep filtration maintenance and water testing together in your regular pond-care routine.

Positioning and connecting the housing

The 15000 uses 25, 32 and 40mm stepped inlet and outlet connections. SuperFish’s manual describes 32mm hose on the larger TopClear models so that the flow indicator remains visible. If trimming a stepped hosetail to match the chosen hose, unscrew it from the filter before cutting. Fit the hose securely and inspect every connection for leakage when the pump is first started.

The manual specifies installation beside the pond with a minimum separation of 50cm and a maximum water head of 2m. Keep the outlet unrestricted: reducing or blocking the return can cause excessive pressure and leakage. Plan enough room for the CLEAN outlet and waste hose, as well as the permanent inlet and return. Partial burial may conceal the body, but the lid and service connections must remain accessible.

Backwashing and the cleaning outlet

Check the flow indicator weekly. A falling flow is a prompt to inspect and clean the filter; a newly installed unit collecting a heavy initial dirt load may need backwashing much more frequently. The manufacturer’s manual notes that daily flushing can be necessary during that initial clean-up. Base the interval on what the filter is collecting and the observed flow.

The Auto Clean Wash function reverses water through the sponge and flushes debris through the CLEAN connection. Follow the supplied sequence and restore the end cap when finished. The optional TopClear backwash valve 06020719 is the manufacturer-listed accessory for the 10000, 15000 and 18000. It is available separately; this listing should not be confused with a package that includes the valve.

Opening the filter for a full service

Disconnect the pump and filter from their electrical supplies before maintenance. The annual service includes opening the housing, inspecting the foam and seal and cleaning the appropriate parts. Release opposite clamps in turn as described in the manual. Check that the seal is clean and undamaged before refitting the lid, then inspect for leaks when restarting.

SuperFish lists the TopClear 10/15/18 sponge as the replacement foam for this model. The manual recommends annual replacement, or sooner if required. It permits tap-water rinsing of the foam and dividing plate but specifically requires pond water for the Bio-balls, helping preserve their established bacteria. Do not apply the mechanical-media cleaning method to every component indiscriminately.

UVC servicing and seasonal shutdown

The lamp is 11W. The manufacturer’s schedule includes monthly operation checks and annual lamp replacement, with quartz cleaning and inspection during servicing. Lamp visibility is not a measure of remaining useful UV output. Allow the disconnected lamp to cool before opening the unit, and follow the instructions for the fitted hardware version.

Both red-lock and green-lock TopClear manuals are available on the SuperFish product page. Check the actual generation when buying internal electrical or quartz components. Turn the UVC off when water is not flowing. If the system is shut down for winter, the manufacturer directs removal of the filter to avoid freezing damage.
