A matched filter and circulation pump

The TopClear 10000 kit brings together the pressure filter, a 9W ultraviolet clarifier and the Pond-Flow ECO 3000 pump. Foam intercepts suspended waste, while Bio-balls provide surfaces for biological filtration. The pump moves pond water through those stages and back to the pond. This is the complete pump-and-filter version; the TopClear 10000 filter-only option is available if you already have a suitable pump.

Choosing the kit establishes which pump is paired with the filter, but the layout still needs to suit your pond. Measure the inlet and return routes, allow for access to both pieces of equipment and identify a place for the cleaning discharge. Hose lengths and installation accessories depend on that layout.

What the capacity figures mean

The manufacturer rates this filter for a maximum pond volume of 10,000 litres. That is a pond-content figure, not the hourly circulation rate. The included Pond-Flow ECO 3000 has a published maximum flow of 2,900 litres per hour and a power rating of 45W. The number 3000 in the pump’s name should not replace the published flow specification when comparing equipment.

Actual delivery depends on hose resistance, fittings, the filter and the height of the return. The pump’s maximum head is 2.3m, but that is not a promise of maximum flow at that height. The TopClear filter manual separately sets a maximum water head of 2m for the filter installation. Both component limits matter when planning the system.

Fish numbers and feeding also affect the required filtration. An ornamental pond with a light fish load and a heavily stocked koi pond can place very different demands on equipment even when their water volumes match. Assess the stock and the intended circulation before relying on the maximum pond rating alone.

Dimensions, cable and hose interfaces

The filter housing measures 35 × 44 × 46cm. The Pond-Flow ECO 3000 pump measures 20.9 × 9.4 × 12.7cm and has a 10m cable. Plan room above the filter for opening the lid and removing the media, as well as a stable position for the submerged pump.

The filter offers 25, 32 and 40mm inlet and outlet steps; the pump outlet offers 20, 25 and 32mm steps. The TopClear manual describes 32mm hose for the larger filters so that the flow indicator remains visible. Check both ends of each hose run and remove stepped fittings before trimming them. Secure the hoses with suitable clamps and inspect the connections when first filling and starting the system.

Installing the two components

The filter sits beside the pond, with the manual specifying a minimum separation of 50cm. Its lid-mounted connections allow the body to be partly concealed in the ground. Leave the lid, clamp points and CLEAN connection accessible so routine work does not require dismantling the pond surround. The return outlet must remain unrestricted; do not reduce or block it.

The pump operates underwater on a firm, level base. Its instructions specify at least 20cm of water above it and a maximum immersion depth of 2m. Immersion depth is a different measurement from delivery head. Keep the cable protected, lift the pump by its handle and disconnect both electrical units before maintenance. The supplied manuals explain the electrical connection and drip-loop arrangements.

Routine cleaning through the CLEAN outlet

Use the flow indicator as part of a weekly check. When delivery falls, inspect the filter and carry out the prescribed backwash. During the initial clean-up of a dirty pond, the manufacturer notes that daily flushing can be needed. A fixed weekly cleaning interval may therefore be insufficient while the filter collects an unusually heavy debris load.

Auto Clean Wash reverses water through the sponge and sends the waste out through the CLEAN outlet. Set up a waste hose and follow the operating sequence in the filter manual. Refit the end cap and its seal afterwards. The optional backwash valve for the 10000, 15000 and 18000 is reference 06020719; it is a separately supplied accessory.

Media and ultraviolet maintenance

Periodic servicing still requires opening the housing. SuperFish lists the TopClear 10/15/18 replacement sponge for this filter, with annual replacement recommended or earlier when required. During cleaning, use pond water for the Bio-balls to help protect established bacteria. The manual permits a different rinsing method for the foam and dividing plate, so treat the media according to their individual instructions.

The integrated lamp is 9W. Check operation monthly and follow the annual lamp-replacement and quartz-service schedule. Match replacement electrical and quartz components to the fitted red-lock or green-lock generation. Both manuals are linked from the SuperFish TopClear page. Turn the UVC off whenever water stops flowing.

Pump servicing and choosing another kit size

The pump manual calls for cleaning at least twice a year. Remove accumulated debris and scale, and inspect the rotor when servicing. Thermal protection can stop an overheating pump and allow it to restart after cooling; investigate the cause rather than treating repeated stoppages as normal operation. Follow the winter removal and frost-free storage instructions for both components when shutting down.

For a smaller package, the TopClear 5000 kit uses a Pond-Flow ECO 2000 and 7W UVC. The TopClear 18000 kit uses a different PondECO pump and 18W UVC. Compare the complete specifications rather than assuming these packages differ only in filter volume.
