These pond filter foam sets provide graded mechanical media for filter layouts that accept general replacement sheets. Choose the small 17 × 11-inch set or the large 43 × 21-inch set to suit the space available. The profiled sheets shown in the product photograph have a raised, undulating surface; compare that shape with the media your filter needs before ordering.

The sets are listed by SKS as CMF: coarse, medium and fine. They are a practical option when renewing suitable sheet media, provided the dimensions, thickness and arrangement match your filter. A sheet set does not establish compatibility with every box filter, and it should not be selected solely from the pond volume.

The metric measurements above are rounded conversions of the supplier’s inch dimensions. Measure the actual compartment as well as the old foam: a worn sheet may have shrunk, torn or become permanently compressed. Allow for the full outline, corners and any pipe openings your particular filter requires.

How the graded foam works

Mechanical foam intercepts suspended waste as pond water travels through it. In a filter designed for successive grades, the coarse stage meets larger debris first, followed by medium and finer media. This staged arrangement helps avoid asking the finest layer to collect all of the incoming waste. Follow the flow direction and media order specified for your own filter, including any spacers or retaining grids.

The three colours in the photograph make the layers easy to distinguish visually, but colour is not a universal grading system across pond-filter brands. Coarse, medium and fine are relative descriptions here; no numerical pore rating is specified for these sets. If your filter requires an exact foam grade or a dedicated shaped cartridge, check that requirement before substituting a general sheet.

Measure before trimming or fitting

Lay out the replacement against the required shape before making a cut, where your filter design permits trimming. Check both dimensions in the size table: a sheet with enough length can still be too narrow. Retain the original arrangement as a reference, particularly where different layers have different cut-outs or must sit against a retaining frame.

A good fit directs water through the foam without leaving an easy route around its edges. Avoid squeezing an oversized stack into the chamber, since compression changes the available passage for water. Equally, several small offcuts with gaps between them do not necessarily provide the same fit as a correctly sized continuous sheet. Confirm the required thickness separately if the filter lid, support or cartridge depends on it.

Foam and filter wool serve different maintenance needs

Keep the original filter layout in mind when choosing between them. Wool should not be used to replace a shaped foam component that also needs to hold its form within a cartridge.

Adding more layers is not automatically an improvement. The filter must still pass its intended flow, and the media must remain accessible for routine cleaning. Check that any intended bypass or overflow remains clear and that the media cannot move into an outlet as water passes through the chamber.

Cleaning and deciding when to replace foam

Collected dirt is a reason to inspect and clean the foam, rather than automatically throw it away. Follow the filter maker’s cleaning instructions and inspect each sheet for splitting, crumbling or permanent distortion. Replacement becomes useful when the sheet no longer fits properly or cannot retain a serviceable structure after cleaning.

Established media can also carry beneficial bacteria. Where biological activity needs to be preserved, clean media in pond water and avoid treating the whole filter as something that must be sterilised. Plan replacement alongside the condition of the rest of the media, and check the water after substantial maintenance. Check the filter after restarting

Once the sheets are fitted, restart the system according to its instructions and watch the water level and return flow. Look for water escaping around the media, rising unusually in the chamber or backing up near an outlet. Recheck after the foam has started collecting debris, because a layout that passes water when clean may behave differently as it loads.

Set the inspection frequency from what your pond actually produces. Leaf fall, disturbed sediment and changing feeding levels can alter how quickly mechanical media needs attention. Keeping notes of the sheet size and arrangement makes the next maintenance visit easier and helps you order the same suitable replacement again.
