Seven separate readings, with different jobs

This case is useful when you want to investigate more than acidity alone. The pH test measures acidity or alkalinity, while GH measures general hardness and KH measures carbonate hardness. Although these are often recorded together, they describe different properties of the water and are separate tests. A pH result is not a substitute for a KH or GH reading.

The remaining tests measure ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate. Record each one under its own name and with the units shown on its chart. In particular, nitrite and nitrate are different parameters: their similar names do not make the tests interchangeable. Having both in the case lets you check them separately instead of relying on one as an indication of the other.

Prepare the samples before opening reagents

Colombo’s instructions start with clean test tubes and an accurately measured water sample. Clean the tube promptly after use so that residues from one test do not carry into the next. Keep reagent bottles upright when dispensing drops and avoid air bubbles in them. These are small practical details, but they help keep the quantity added consistent with the procedure.

Set out the instructions and the correct colour chart before beginning. A timer is useful for tests that need a development period, and a written log helps keep results organised when working through several parameters. Identify the bottles by their labels each time; coloured caps can help with organisation, but should not replace checking the actual reagent name.

KH uses a drop count and colour change

The current Colombo KH instructions use a 5ml sample. Add the KH reagent one drop at a time, mixing after each addition, and count the total needed to change the sample from blue to yellow. The count gives the result in degrees of hardness: for example, four drops to the endpoint represent 4°DH. If the first drop turns the sample yellow, the instructions identify a value below 1°DH.

This is different from adding a fixed number of drops and comparing a developed shade with a chart. Keep counting from the first drop, and use the exact sample volume in the instructions. Changing the amount of water without a manufacturer procedure changes the meaning of the drop count. The individual Colombo KH test is available when that reagent needs replenishing.

Ammonia, nitrate and phosphate need their own sequence

Colombo’s current ammonia instructions use a 10ml sample and three labelled liquids, NH3-1, NH3-2 and NH3-3. Each is added in turn, with mixing between additions, followed by a 15-minute wait before the colour comparison. This is a Colombo procedure: do not use the reagent count or waiting time remembered from another brand’s ammonia kit.

The nitrate method also starts with 10ml, but combines two liquids with nitrate powder. The current leaflet specifies one spoon of powder from the green-cap container, shaking for 20 seconds and then waiting 15 minutes before reading. The Colombo nitrate test can be bought separately when you need to replace that part of the case.

Phosphate is another distinct method. Its current instructions describe a 10ml sample, two liquids and two spoons of phosphate powder from the blue-cap container, with a ten-minute development time. Keep the correct powder with its matching test and use the supplied measuring tool. Read the matching scale and retain the result

Use the chart belonging to the test you have just completed, and read it at the instructed time. Write down the result straight away instead of trying to remember seven readings at the end. If you cannot confidently distinguish between two colours, record that uncertainty and repeat the procedure with a fresh sample before relying on a precise number.

The case combines liquid tests, rather than a set of interchangeable electronic sensors. It provides individual measurements that you interpret together with the pond’s circumstances. Note the date and any recent water change, filter maintenance or alteration in feeding alongside your results. This makes it easier to compare later readings with what was happening in the pond at the time.

Replenish the tests you use most

Colombo supplies the component tests separately, so using up one parameter does not require replacing the whole case. Match the replacement by parameter and product family, and retain its current instructions with the reagents. Check bottle condition, storage directions and expiry information before use, especially if the case has been put away between seasons.
