Miniature Pennywort (Hydrocotyle novae-zeelandiae)
A compact oxygenating pond plant with rounded green leaves for shallow shelves and wildlife ponds
Miniature Pennywort (Hydrocotyle novae-zeelandiae) is a compact oxygenating pond plant with small rounded green leaves and a soft creeping habit. It is useful for shallow pond shelves, damp margins and natural pond edges where low, fresh foliage is wanted.
This plant is best used as a rooted potted oxygenator rather than a loose deep water bunch. It grows close to the surface and can create gentle cover for amphibians, froglets, emerging insects and small pond creatures.
Miniature Pennywort is particularly useful in smaller ponds because it adds greenery without becoming tall or bulky. Its rounded leaves contrast nicely with fine leaved oxygenators, waterlilies and upright marginal plants.
During active growth, it contributes to the pond ecosystem by producing oxygen during daylight and using nutrients from the surrounding water and planting medium. It should be used as part of a varied planting scheme rather than as the only oxygenating plant.
For best results, position it in good light and avoid allowing larger plants to shade it heavily. It may need occasional trimming if it spreads beyond the desired area.
Potted Oxygenators and Bunched Oxygenators
Potted oxygenators are supplied rooted in aquatic soil and are usually placed on pond shelves or in shallow water. They often provide useful cover near the water surface, making them valuable for amphibians, froglets and aquatic insects.
Bunched oxygenators are usually weighted and placed into deeper areas of the pond, where they can sink towards the pond floor and root into the substrate.
Miniature Pennywort is best used as a shallow water potted oxygenating and habitat plant rather than a deep submerged oxygenator. It pairs well with deeper oxygenating bunches, marginals and waterlilies to create planting at several different depths.
