Water Crowfoot | Ranunculus Aquatilis
Native Oxygenating Pond Plant with Beautiful White Flowers and Exceptional Wildlife Benefits
Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis) is one of the finest native oxygenating pond plants available for UK ponds. Combining delicate white flowers, excellent water quality benefits, and outstanding wildlife value, this beautiful aquatic plant is a must have for wildlife ponds, ornamental ponds, natural swimming ponds, and larger water features.
During summer, Water Crowfoot produces masses of attractive white buttercup-like flowers that float gracefully on the water’s surface. These nectar rich blooms attract bees, hoverflies, and other beneficial pollinators, adding both beauty and biodiversity to your pond. Beneath the surface, the finely divided feathery foliage creates a lush underwater habitat that provides shelter for fish, amphibians, aquatic insects, and developing dragonfly larvae.
As a highly effective oxygenating pond plant, Water Crowfoot plays an important role in maintaining a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Through active growth, it releases oxygen into the water while absorbing excess nutrients that would otherwise feed algae and blanketweed. This helps support clearer water, healthier fish, and a more balanced pond environment.
Water Crowfoot is particularly valuable in wildlife ponds. Frogs, newts, and other amphibians frequently use the dense submerged foliage for cover and breeding. The intricate underwater growth also provides a safe refuge for pond insects and young fish, making it one of the most wildlife friendly oxygenators available.
This native British species thrives in both still and gently moving water and can be planted at depths ranging from 5cm to 150cm. Once established, it spreads naturally through the pond, creating attractive floating mats of foliage and flowers without becoming difficult to manage.
Each pack contains 5 weighted bunches of Water Crowfoot, providing coverage for approximately 2.5 square metres of pond surface. The weighted bunches make planting simple, allowing them to sink naturally to the pond floor where they can root into suitable substrates.
Easy to grow and fully hardy throughout the UK, Water Crowfoot is an excellent choice for anyone looking to improve water quality, encourage wildlife, and create a more natural pond environment.

Care Instructions
Place the weighted bunches directly into the pond at a depth between 5cm and 150cm. Ideally, allow the stems to root into gravel, sand, or fine aquatic soil for long term stability.
If your pond has no substrate, place the bunches into an aquatic basket filled with aquatic compost or fine sand and position it on the pond floor or a lower shelf.
Water Crowfoot grows best in clear water where sunlight can reach the foliage and support healthy oxygen production.
Trim excess growth as required throughout the growing season. Any removed material should be left at the pond edge for 24 hours before disposal, allowing pond creatures to safely return to the water.
