Willow Moss | Fontinalis Antipyretica

Evergreen Native Oxygenating Moss for Ponds, Streams and Waterfalls

Create Natural Wildlife Habitat with This Hardy UK Native Aquatic Moss

Willow Moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) is one of the most valuable native oxygenating plants available for ponds, streams, waterfalls, and wildlife water features. Unlike many traditional oxygenators, this attractive aquatic moss forms soft, flowing mats of deep green foliage that remain attractive throughout the year, providing continuous benefits for water quality and pond wildlife.

Naturally found in streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes throughout the UK, Willow Moss thrives in both still and moving water. It is particularly well suited to waterfalls, streams, spillways, and flowing water features where it can anchor itself to rocks, gravel, submerged wood, and crevices. As it establishes, it creates beautiful underwater carpets that move gently with the water current, adding a highly natural appearance to any pond.

As an oxygenating pond plant, Willow Moss helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and releasing oxygen into the water during daylight hours. This natural process helps create healthier conditions for fish, amphibians, aquatic insects, and other pond wildlife while assisting in the control of algae and blanketweed growth.

One of the biggest advantages of Willow Moss is the shelter it provides. Its dense branching structure creates ideal hiding places for fish fry, tadpoles, newts, freshwater shrimp, and aquatic insects. It is particularly valuable in wildlife ponds where amphibians use the foliage for protection and breeding habitat.

Being evergreen, Willow Moss continues providing structure and visual interest throughout the winter months when many aquatic plants die back. It remains attractive all year and continues supporting pond biodiversity even during colder weather.

Each pack contains 5 weighted bunches, making installation quick and simple. The weighted stems can be placed directly into gravel, attached to rocks, tucked into waterfall crevices, or positioned in aquatic baskets filled with gravel. Once established, Willow Moss requires very little maintenance and can thrive for many years.

For pond owners looking to create a more natural pond environment while improving water quality and supporting wildlife, Willow Moss is one of the best native oxygenating plants available.

Care Instructions

Willow Moss is extremely easy to grow and requires very little maintenance once established.

Place the weighted bunches directly into gravel, between rocks, within waterfall crevices, or in an aquatic basket filled with gravel. It performs best when permanently submerged and can be grown in both moving and still water.

For maximum oxygenation and growth, position in full sun or partial shade where the water remains clear and receives good light levels.

If growth becomes excessive, simply trim back as required. Place any removed material at the pond edge for 24 hours before disposal, allowing any pond creatures to safely return to the water.

Flowering Period

Year-round foliage interest.

As a moss, Willow Moss does not produce showy flowers. Its ornamental value comes from its attractive evergreen branching foliage and ecological benefits.
