Lawn Pennywort (Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides ‘Crystal Confetti’)
A low growing variegated oxygenating pond plant for shallow shelves, small ponds and damp margins
Lawn Pennywort (Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides ‘Crystal Confetti’) is a low growing oxygenating pond plant with small rounded leaves and attractive variegation. It is ideal for shallow shelves, damp pond margins and small pond planting schemes where fine detail matters.
This plant is best used as a rooted potted oxygenator rather than a deep submerged bunch. Its creeping growth stays close to the surface and helps provide low cover around the pond edge.
The variegated foliage adds a brighter, more decorative look than many plain green oxygenators. It works particularly well in small ponds, patio ponds and naturalistic planting where you want soft foliage interest without too much height.
During active growth, Lawn Pennywort contributes to oxygen production during daylight and uses nutrients from the surrounding water and planting medium. It is best combined with deeper bunches and other aquatic plants for a more balanced pond habitat.
For best results, grow in good light with consistent moisture or shallow water. It may be less vigorous in colder conditions and should not be allowed to dry out.
Potted Oxygenators and Bunched Oxygenators
Potted oxygenators are supplied rooted in aquatic soil and are usually placed on pond shelves or in shallow water. They often provide useful cover near the water surface, making them valuable for amphibians, froglets and aquatic insects.
Bunched oxygenators are usually weighted and placed into deeper areas of the pond, where they can sink towards the pond floor and root into the substrate.
Lawn Pennywort is best used as a shallow water potted oxygenating and habitat plant rather than a deep submerged oxygenator. It pairs well with deeper oxygenating bunches, marginals and waterlilies to create planting at several different depths.
