Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) is one of the most useful native oxygenating pond plants for UK ponds. It forms dense, feathery submerged growth that can float freely or sink into deeper areas, making it ideal for adding quick underwater cover to wildlife ponds, fish ponds and natural garden ponds.

Unlike rooted potted pond plants, Hornwort does not need aquatic soil to grow well. It can drift naturally through the water or settle into areas of gravel, silt or pond substrate. This makes it especially useful for new ponds where you want to introduce submerged planting without disturbing the pond base.

The fine green stems create valuable refuge for tadpoles, newts, small fish, aquatic insects and young pond life. During the growing season the plant also contributes to the pond ecosystem by producing oxygen during daylight and using nutrients as it grows.

Hornwort is a good choice for ponds where you want a simple, low maintenance oxygenator that can be added quickly. It works well in deeper water, around the pond base, or mixed with potted oxygenators on shelves to create planting at several levels.

Growth can be strong in good light and nutrient rich water, so excess stems can be thinned out during the growing season if required. Removed growth should always be left beside the pond for 24 hours before composting, allowing any small pond creatures to return to the water.

Potted Oxygenators and Bunched Oxygenators

Potted oxygenators are supplied rooted in aquatic soil and are usually placed on pond shelves or in shallow water. They often provide useful cover near the water surface, making them valuable for amphibians, froglets and aquatic insects.

Bunched oxygenators are usually weighted and placed into deeper areas of the pond, where they can sink towards the pond floor and root into the substrate.

Hornwort is best used as a free floating or sinking bunched oxygenator rather than a potted shelf plant. It does not need aquatic soil or a basket, making it especially useful for adding quick submerged cover in deeper parts of the pond.

Care Instructions

• Place the weighted bunches directly into the pond and allow them to sink or float naturally. If preferred, tuck the weighted ends into gravel, fine substrate or natural pond silt.
• Grow in full sun or partial shade. Good light supports stronger growth and better oxygen production during daylight hours.
• Thin out excess growth during the growing season if it becomes too dense. Leave removed stems beside the pond for 24 hours before composting so pond creatures can return to the water.
• Hornwort may grow less strongly in very shaded, very murky or newly filled ponds until the pond has settled.

Flowering Period

Hornwort can produce very small, insignificant greenish flowers, although it is grown mainly for its submerged foliage rather than for flower display.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Hornwort will arrive as freshly prepared weighted bunches, ready to place directly into your pond.

Each bunch is carefully prepared and weighted to help it sink naturally and establish in a suitable position.

Plants are dispatched fresh during the growing season and may vary in appearance depending on the time of year, water temperature and current nursery growth.

Open the packaging promptly on arrival and place the bunches into pond water as soon as possible. Never allow bunched oxygenators to dry out.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a 2 day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.
