Mace Sedge | Carex grayi

Architectural pond plant with striking star shaped seed heads and graceful foliage

Mace Sedge, known botanically as Carex grayi, is a truly distinctive marginal pond plant that brings bold structure and visual interest to pond edges, bog gardens, and damp planting areas. Best known for its unusual star shaped seed heads, this plant creates a unique focal point that stands out in both naturalistic and more designed water gardens.

Appearing from late spring into summer, the seed heads form intricate green star like clusters that gradually mature and add texture throughout the season. These unusual forms make Mace Sedge a favourite among gardeners looking for something a little different, offering interest beyond traditional flowers. Combined with its arching, narrow green foliage, it creates a soft yet architectural presence around the pond edge.

This clump forming perennial grows in neat, manageable tufts, making it suitable for both smaller ponds and larger wildlife areas. It spreads gradually without becoming invasive, allowing it to integrate beautifully with other marginal plants. Its dense foliage provides excellent ground cover, helping to stabilise soil and prevent erosion along pond margins.

Mace Sedge is also highly beneficial for wildlife. The thick foliage offers shelter for amphibians such as frogs and newts, while also providing cover for insects and small pond creatures. This makes it an excellent addition to wildlife friendly ponds where creating a balanced ecosystem is important.

Thriving in moist to wet soils or shallow water up to around 20 cm deep, this plant is ideal for marginal shelves and boggy borders. It performs well in full sun or partial shade, giving flexibility in planting design.

Fully hardy in UK conditions, Mace Sedge is a reliable and low maintenance choice that will return year after year. Whether used as a structural feature or as part of a mixed planting scheme, it brings texture, movement, and ecological value to any pond setting.
