Apache Beads
Unique marginal pond plant with aromatic foliage and striking white flowers
Apache Beads (Anemopsis californicum), also known as Yerba Mansa, is a distinctive and highly ornamental marginal pond plant that brings both texture and fragrance to pond edges and bog gardens. This clump forming perennial is particularly valued for its unusual flowers and aromatic foliage, making it a standout choice for those looking to create a more natural and characterful planting scheme.
From late spring through to early autumn, Apache Beads produces eye catching white flowers that are often flushed with soft pink tones. These blooms sit above the foliage and have a unique, almost sculptural appearance that sets them apart from more traditional pond plants. The flowers also carry a light, pleasant fragrance, adding an extra sensory layer to your pond environment.
The foliage is just as appealing, with broad green leaves that release a gentle aroma when brushed or disturbed. As the season progresses into autumn, the leaves can take on attractive red and orange tones, providing extended seasonal interest even after flowering has finished. This makes Apache Beads a great option for adding colour and variation throughout the year.
Ideal for pond margins and boggy soils, this plant thrives in shallow water or consistently damp conditions. It performs best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade, although flowering may be reduced slightly in lower light conditions. It prefers sheltered positions where it is protected from strong winds.
With a moderate growth rate and tidy clump forming habit, Apache Beads is easy to manage and works well alongside other marginal plants. It is also pollinator friendly, helping to attract beneficial insects and support biodiversity around your pond.
Supplied pre planted in an aquatic basket, this plant is ready to be placed straight into your pond, making it a simple and effective way to enhance your pond margins.
