Cyperus Sedge | Carex pseudocyperus

Native pond marginal sedge with arching foliage and distinctive drooping flower heads

Cyperus Sedge (Carex pseudocyperus) is a striking UK native marginal plant that adds both structure and movement to pond edges, wetlands, and natural planting schemes. Known for its bright green, arching foliage and unusual drooping flower heads, this plant creates a soft yet architectural presence that works beautifully in wildlife ponds and naturalistic landscapes.

Growing in dense clumps, Cyperus Sedge typically reaches heights of 60 cm to 90 cm, with long, narrow leaves that gracefully arch outwards. These leaves create a fountain like effect, softening pond edges and blending seamlessly with surrounding planting. From late spring into summer, the plant produces distinctive pale green flower spikes that hang down like tassels, adding texture and subtle interest that stands out among other marginal plants.

This sedge thrives in moist to waterlogged soils and can be planted directly on pond margins or in shallow water. It performs well in full sun or partial shade, making it a flexible choice for a wide range of pond environments. Once established, it is hardy, reliable, and requires very little maintenance.

Cyperus Sedge is particularly valuable for wildlife. Its dense growth provides shelter and nesting areas for wildfowl, while also offering protection for amphibians such as frogs and newts. It also plays an important role in stabilising pond edges, helping to prevent erosion and maintain a healthy pond structure.

Because of its natural growth habit, this plant is ideal for wildlife ponds, larger garden ponds, and naturalistic landscaping projects where a more relaxed and ecological look is desired. It pairs well with other native marginal plants and helps create a balanced and thriving pond ecosystem.

Fully hardy in the UK and easy to grow, Cyperus Sedge is an excellent choice for anyone looking to combine visual impact with ecological benefits in their pond planting.
